I heard that it was a bad idea to use batteries for doing a firmware update on the GP2X.

Is it possible to use a USB cable plugged into a PC as a power source for the GP2X while doing a firmware flash?

I see

So should I go ahead and buy a GP2X AC Adapter? Or is there a cheaper alternative?

Is it really that bad of an idea to use fully charged 2500 mAh NiMH Rayovac rechargeable batteries for a firmware update?

short answer: no

long answer: yes, but it will probably damage your GP2X and not work properly and you need to make some devices to do it

With USB, assuming 80% efficiency, you would get 2 watts of power. The 2X can easily eat much more than that.

Batteries are fine if you know how long the firmware update will take. But depending on several factors, it could take several hours to upgrade, and thus the batteries would discharge too much and crash the 2x whilst flashing (=very bad).

Buy an adaptor. It's worth it.
