Vlc With Openmax Acceleration.

I was wondering if we could use this, or if it's supported out of the box, I think the probability is reasonably high.

From VideoLAN's Twitter:

"VLC 1.1 just got an OpenMAX IL implementation. Using 15% CPU on the N900 to decode 480p h264! http://bit.ly/a82lwt"
 
Well, it says Open, right? And VLC is open, and the N900 uses our chipset.
This would be great for, say, using 15% CPU to watch a full-res, full-screen YouTube video and using the remaining 80% to compile something or transcode or decrypt something.
 
Sure, if we can get upstream Angstrom to build with that new switch to turn this on then hopefully the DSP acceleration'll just work out of the box which will be awesome.

Or better yet, full-res, full-screen YouTube video while scaling down the CPU 80pct to save power and get more battery life :)

well, as long as we get access to some of those optimized codecs, getting vlc to run will probably be an easy task.

Now that there's an open implementation, there's hope mplayer and xbmc will implement it, too.
 
I thought we had a usable DSP codec? Whether it be the TI implementation or what appears to be a less functional variant called Bellagio? Player support was the missing link, or am I wrong? TI's DSP codec appears to not just be binary-only but open source under an LGPL license.

I think the catch with getting this to work is the dsp bridge kernel modules and getting them working, im not sure ive seen anything that its been setup yet. It could be tricky as TI likes playing games with software they supply.
 
Hey Pickle, good to see ya. Thanks for all the ports. If we can use the DSP to decode video that would be great. I know the *potential* was always there, but hadn't heard it was actually deployed anywhere. I don't think we'll have to, but it sounds like it'll sure save on the battery life!
