Hi. I have been looking into portable devices for making music when i'm away from my studio. While looking for info on the PSP and DS i came across this GP2X which sounds great on paper but i was wondering what music software was available and if you could post links to it.

Also are there any audio demos made with it? Is it possible to create full tracks on it away from the computer and does it have everything i need connect it to a pa system/mixer or do i need to buy other equipment?

Would i be better off waiting for Pandora? I want somethnig small and portable that i can write decent sounding tracks on. And finally, can the GP2X be used as a midi controller wirelessly?

Thanks.

Littlegptracker is the program you want - the controls take a bit of time to learn though.

it can output midi but using it wirelessly may be a chore to get working! (firstly you need to build a midi convertor http://wiki.littlegptracker.com/doku.php?id=lgpt:midi)

If you visit the program site (http://www.littlegptracker.com/) there are whole tracks made with it that you can use yourself.

and yes if you have not got the gp2X i would wait for the pandora :)

if you go with the DS, the korg DS-10 software was recently released, its fantastic stuff. Might be a little "lower tech" than your used to, but its great stuff.

while there is only a Japanese version so far, its completely in English.
considering a shiny new flashcard and ds costs you about 160$, it might be a little high, but consider that your getting a brand new, unbrickable, 2gb of storage, emulator/commercial game, web browsing, ball of awesome.

The ds is quite nice for jotting ideas down. I imported an early Ds10 cart it is fun and impressive in ways i didnt think the ds could manage but also very frustratingly limited in ways it didnt need to be. Nitrotracker is nice and will eventualy have a full set of tracker commands which will make it quite powerful but Little gp tracker on the gp2x is as big a lump of lovely as you re going to find on a mobile platform. It has its flaws but i find it very usable. Google it and you can find lots of music made with it on the main site.

If you wait for the pandora a lot of people will be porting all sorts of music software to it. Little gp, milky, Sunvox (which is fantastic), and im sure people will be sticking mini DAW apps and grid based sequencing apps on there too. If the pandora seems too clunky then marc who wrote littlegp says he should have it running on the wiz when thats out... who knows what other software that might end up getting.... im taking a wait and see approach for both.

not sure what kind of music your tryin to work with, but you should look into beat maker for iphone/ipod touch as its only $20

Sigh...this is a tough topic. When I switched from PPC to GP2X, I lost the only PPC program I still miss, Griff Pocket Music Studio. Totally awesome and easy to make all sorts of new sounds with internally. I posted at their forums hoping for a port eventually, but in the meantime, I have been looking into some other possible work-arounds.

The GP2X does emulators well, so I started looking into some emulated options too. Oddly, most I've found have been for the Gameboy line. The following links are not to roms, you are on your own for those. Most are available for free or sale at the official links provided below.

Nanoloop:

LittleSoundDJ (basically littlegptracker):

Pocket Music (only a review available):

I am also looking into options for the bigger consoles and comps that the GP2X can emulate. The GB ones leave a lot to be desired, from what I've seen. If anyone knows of any other good titles for music creation, especially from the the 16 bit era, please post them!

EDIT: In looking further at some of my own links, keep in mind some of these are in cart form, so you'd have to talk with their authors for one that would run in an emulator.

I'm getting a Pandora just so I can write music apps for it, exclusively. So yeah.

Right now my portable studio consists of an iPhone, a GP2x, and a Nintendo DS all chained together through a Freescale SoundBite board. Its a rockin' rig, but I hope it'll really start to rock when I add the Pandora to it and write a few nice synths and effects apps for it. Which, by the way, I think its going to do very well with ..

You don't want to wait forever for the "next thing"

Used GP2X devices cost next to nothing, and armed with Little Piggy Tracker and a big SD card you have a great portable sampler already! Start creating music tomorrow, instead of waiting a year or so before some soft reaches workable status on Pandora...

I have made a lot of music with Little Piggy Tracker in the last six months or so, I just released a free album of the trax: http://www.aavepyora.net

And I'm waiting also a lot for Pandora! And I really hope somebody releases some good software for it, it should handle a LOT of stuff well :) (compare Dream Station for example, that ran a ton of synthesized tracks on my 600mhz computer back in 2001...)
