Video edditing on the TI OMAP 5?

I don't want to start an argument here but I was wondering if the processor is fast enough to do video editing. I've been looking at editing on Android for a while and the last three years it has gotten much much better that what the video editing was. I'm not talking a movie for the silver screen quality but a vlog for travelers, basically all a android device can do right now. It would be nice to dump the notebook and just use my Pyra.
 
Hm, if someone would code a decent video editor, maybe.
kdenlive is okay, but way too unoptimized (even runs slow on my normal PC)
 
OpenShot works wonderfully on my desktop, highly recommend. It is open source, should be able to build it for the OMAP I think. Although a cursory search suggests there may be problems cross compiling for ARM, but that may have been resolved? I'unno.

edit: Apparently OpenShot 2.0 is Python based, no compiling necessary, it'll work so long as you have the requirements which, granted, seem to be numerous.
 
Any openshot version I've used works great, apart from it crashing a couple times every five minutes.
kdenlive is the only one I've come across that doesn't crash all the time and has a relatively intuitive user interface. I kina want to like cinelerra, but It's really weird to work with. Kino is a great video editor, if it wasn't for the fact that it's hardcoded for PAL/NTSC SD video, and will refuse to work with anything unless you let it re-encode clips into that resolution. On Debian, Lives seems to start once, after that it won't start again.

That's my experience with video editors on linux, anyway.

I did briefely try some new-ish one that I can't remember the name of, but it was this huge bloated thing, that probably was written in node.js or simlarly stupid language, and it didn't really work right, despite coming in one of those app bundle things.
 
Yeah, I looked at the video editors on Linux, I'll probably end up using openshot on my notebook, but for such a small screen these programs really need a new interface. I tried a few on my phone and they do varying degrees of using the screen real estate. This is cool that there aren't any negative comments, I thought a lot of people would be 'this would be pointless with such a weak processor' or some such.

The thing about editing video on the pyra over a notebook is it will take longer but a notebook would go dead before you're finished where the pyra's battery would last longer and can be charged with a power bank when out of the middle of nowhere. Doing as much of the vloging done on downtime in your tent at night leaves more time for exploration when you're in the city. Plus there is the weight when backpacking or cycle touring.
 
Shotcut is another good video editor, used on some TV stations.

For me Kdenlive (16.12.3 now) is good to do little videos, maybe larger ones, but didn't tried.
And with the latest versions, so far no crashes at all and really surprised how well it goes on my old low, by today standars, PC.

I cannot believe I haven't heard about Shotcut before. Thanks so much for the tipp! I was looking for an alternative to FCPX (and I hate having to use mac). Finally I've got a decent video editor for my needs!

I thought I had tried them all on linux ^^. I would love to have shotcut on the pyra, but I am afraid that it'll not be powerful enough for a lot of shotcuts functionality. HTML5 implementation is awesome for making custom titles and motion graphics. There is a shite load of filters that one actually uses and needs (including a powerful chroma keyer!)

And it can utilize gpu rendering! Which is a feature I have not seen in most open source video editing so far. Cinelerra supports it as well, but it's so clunky...

There's LightWorks too, but they promised to release the source code, and we are still waiting...

A bit off topic, but there's Natron too for compositing and it's compatible with commercial plugins, like The Foundry Nuke.

I am also surprised that I did not yet know about Shotcut. Thanks, I have to take a close look!

Blender is extremely flexible to set up on small screens. I'm using it on an old 11" Laptop with only a slightly higher resolution than the Pyra's. Its also not much faster than the ARM chip so it will definitely work on that. I started using Blender for video editing only a few months ago and do agree that it is hard to get into. But it works and if you know your way around the interface it is awesome, extremely capable and fun to use.

I plan to use it on the Pyra, albeit with an external keyboard since the software uses shortcuts heavily.

Well, just had to register for that quesiton, How about that? :)

Definitely yes. Altough not all too practical since Blender is really, really based heavily on using loads of shortcuts. But what do I know? Whoever can produce a video using the Pyra while standing up and using shoulder buttons, analog sticks, internal keyboard etc. will be my personal hero for some time! Consider that a challenge :)

Anyway, video editing on comparatively slow machines like the Pyra is definitely doable with Blender, even at 1080p resolution. Still I would stick to slight trimming, cutting and some crossfades. That's probalby just right for on the go video podcast production and other small projects. And if you are patient - everything might be possible. The first video editing systems had only a few MBs of RAM and CPUs in the two digit MHz Range. Still they were used to create many awesome big screen Movies.

I tried blender for compositing but found it too fiddly for my tastes. I guess if you have found a good screen setup and change some shortcuts + add some scripts for routine stuff, it would be a powerful tool even without full size keyboard. Blender on the pandora is definitely too slow for anything serious. I agree though that using blender with pyra modifiers for the shortcuts will be a challenge... my laptop does not have a numpad and it drives me crazy using blender...

Thanks for all the software tipps! I was about to give up on video editing on linux. I have to try natron, just registered on their site. Seems even better and more powerful then shotcut. Need to have another look at lightworks as well, but I think it's not for me.
 
installed kdenlive last night. i have an Acer netbook with a N270 intel atom. single core 32 bit 1.6GHz. 1GB ram. running Debian Jessie and Mate. it installed and runs but havent tried to use it yet.... i dare say the pyra will have more power than this thing.
