GPD Pocket

So, I got Windows 10 Pro N installed, and before I did, I updated the BIOS... and I'm pretty impressed.

  • The fan isn't now constantly on, which makes playing music super quiet
  • The screen is now able to go to sleep, and the music still plays through the headphone (I didn't try speakers, but I imagine they will)
  • Copying files across my WiFi now runs at around 2M/s rather than 200K/s
So it looks like between the BIOS update and the Windows 10 refresh, a lot of my issues with the device have gone away. It's just a shame they got the keyboard layout wrong :)

Which BIOS did you install? I personally run the unlocked Ubuntu BIOS, as the performance is hugely improved over the latest - but there's issues with charging which I really wish they would fix. If the latest BIOS had the more aggressive timings set, I would update.

I downloaded this one...

GPD Pocket BIOS 0807
https://mega.nz/#!RZoG2I6Y!E3tDSn2M2BNn-JxW8pX7OEo8QgxUkFLs11Uw_WiG0Wc
Description: This latest BIOS changes the boot logic. The original BIOS logic is that the device can not boot unless it is charged up to 10 ~ 17 percent. Now even the power is lower than 10%, if you want to boot it, you can just charge it.

I don't know what the difference is between this one and the Ubuntu BIOS though

Yeah, I had that one on and the performance difference was like night and day. If they release an unlocked BIOS with the new charging behaviours, I'll be at it like a rat up a drainpipe.

Not sure if I'm getting confused, are you saying the one I've installed has better performance than the Ubuntu one, but you've kept the Ubuntu version?
I also thought you ran Win10, so what's in the "unlocked" version that's useful?

The unlocked one has better performance - by a large margin. You can clock the RAM to proper speed (1066MHz iirc), adjust the throttling temperatures etc.

See here:

However, there is a bug in the charging that means that the pocket can discharge the entire battery while still plugged into the AC.

Interesting... though I don't really have a problem with it's current performance, so I might just leave the BIOS I have on for now then.

Cool. I found ublock origin can block zxdunny's avatar

I've found a way to block entire users... It's the "ignore" button :)

One thing my Pocket has started doing, is even connected to AC the low power orange LED on the power button has started glowing, but bizarrely the battery is charging and even when I disconnected the charger, it said 75%, but the LED still glowed. Do you know if yours was actually discharging, or you just saw the glowing LED?

Mine, while plugged in and idling at the desktop, charged to 100% - and then discharged to 0% and shut down whilst still plugged in. If you notice that it's plugged in but not charging, re-plugging the charger gets it charging again. It's a royal PITA.

I've just let mine charge to 100% (which I didn't do yesterday), the glowing LED still pulsates, but it stays at 100% without discharging, so that's something. Odd the LED keeps glowing at me though, but I can live with that

Can you do me a favour and put that "See here" and media tag inside spoiler tags. The way the board loads them makes things a little confusing. It doesn't really matter, this'll be on a new page soon, but it'd be nice.

I leave my Pocket in, charging, overnight, then use it for 5 - 6 hours during the day .. I haven't noticed may problems with charging/using cycles, but I've done the BIOS update and I use the ubuntu respin, which I think has power management thingies in it.. but I have had the experience where, even if I leave it fully charged, the Pocket is discharged after a few days. Its just that I use it frequently now (its quite great, really) and don't notice because its a cycle.

GPD Pocket Retropie v4.4 setup via linux ubuntu 17.10.1 unity.

The gpd pocket is quite a popular device i wanted to use it for retro gaming. So i decided to see if i could get Retropie v4.4 latest running on it after abit of fiddling it works great and pretty much runs anything at full speed even N64. So if you have a gpd pocket and fancy using it for some retro gaming follow the quick guide below to get it up and running.

Instructions guide

1) First you will need to get ubuntu distro on your gpd pocket i used ubuntu v17.10.1 unity from stockminds downloads page here https://gpdpocket.cre.ovh/ you will need to write the file to a usb stick and boot from usb to get it installed as a duelboot setup.

2) Once you have your gpd pocket setup with ubuntu 17.10.1 unity we need to change the host name as retropie will not compile all the cores properly. So open terminal and change the host name by typing the command below then reboot your device.
hostnamectl set-hostname gpd-ubuntu

3) Now head over to the retropie wikki below and follow the guide to install retropie 32bit install on your ubuntu distro its pretty easy just follow the steps
https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Debian

4) It will take quite some time to build the cores so sitback and relax and let it install once its done it will be ready i would recomend to make a shortcut on your desktop afterwards to retropie from the applications menu for easy starting of the app.

5) Thats is your done enjoy your retropie setup on gpd pocket

Because its retropie and it has everthing setup all you do is add your game collection if your use to retropie i guess you will like it if your not then wont suit you.

I think PowerGod was wondering why you've picked the GPDPocket for your device of choice, when a Raspberry Pi is a 10th of the price, and runs exactly the same (or close enough). Or if you're still thinking a handheld, why not a GPDWin - which actually has gaming controls
