Heyas - i noticed sudden hearing loss today. So I made some tests. Im still good to about 16khz, but imaging and space is degraded. Very sad.

How do you fare?

The 12kHz cutoff felt fairly easy for me. The 16kHz more tricky, but to my ears the first clips got a bit more top end than the second.

What do you mean by imaging and space? Is that stereo separation stuff?

Being able to localize instruments, and to get a sense of their spatial position.

I'm not sure what should I hear, but these are my impressions:

The second part in the first link has some added sounds, the same that I hear in the second link
 
16kHz? My hearing sails away at 12kHz and I'm still 20 years old.
I did not try the video yet, but I have tested my hearing earlier. Edit: no difference for me.
I can wristle through my teeth at very high frequencies - the spectrum analyzer shows activity while I can't hear anything above 12kHz.
Back in the school days half of the class complained where that god damn high beeping tone comes from, while that was actually me :D

I tested it now again and the limit is still at 12kHz.

Oh, that went in about 1986 with the rise of sampling and over production in pop music at least ;)

When I was younger, I don't think I could tell the difference between a recorded oboe and a recorded clarinet, but I'm better at that these days I think. I listed to quite a lot of jazz these days which I reckon helps train me to separate out instruments, but the prodigious playing of particularly brass instruments these days can make identifying the difference between trombone, trumpet and sax more difficult, not that that's got anything to do with localising the instruments and picking them out.

Not watched it yet, but I'm curious to how they're doing the interpretation. Just treating the luma as samples wouldn't produce an interesting sound I'd have thought; mostly clicks at object boundaries, so they must be doing something else I guess.

It isn't generating sounds out of changes in pixel values.

It is using the motion of the musician to guess which portions of the audio spectrum recorded in the performance (containing a mix of multiple playing instruments) modulate in time with the motion - then it RESYNTHESIZES the sound of the instrument the person is playing, e.g. a violin or a guitar.

It is INSANE.
 
A year and a half ago I had to move my desk because the transformer in the light above me was making an annoying sound that no one else could hear. I got a frequency analyzer to prove that I wasn't crazy. Turned out it was buzzing at 19khz. I apparently have super hearing.
 
I still can hear a CRT TV operating in another room, and I constantly listen to power supply units and hard drives for diagnostic purposes. Especially TV is a nice test, as it operates around 15.6kHz.
 
Am I supposed to hear something in these videos?

The videos both contain two samples of a song. One sample has a low pass filter applied which removes the high frequencies.

The test is to determine which of the two samples (first or second) is lacking the high frequency audio content.

If you can't hear the difference in both, it's not sensible to spend much on high-fi audio gear.

I'm not really old yet, but was interested in looking at these.
 
I'm pretty sure there are videos on youtube covering these sort of hearing tests if you're interested. These were based on a song in a genre I'm not au fait with, so weren't ideal for me, but I've seen similar on youtube before.

As for my experiences, I was using a cheap chinese USB audio solution and bargain bin headphones, so I'm liable to blame the equipment as much as my ears. I can hear various power supplies and crts making their own particular 'sirring' noises still though, so I reckon I'm okay for my age.
