New Atari Console Coming (Ataribox)?


Yeah, it always felt like it was majorly lead by the sales team, but it's only recently shown that the only technical backup they had they weren't paying properly, and has now upped and left them. Given the salesmen are still there I still expect a few more turns in this show, but we'll see.
 
Oh boy, I wish I had so much money available to do the Pyra properly... they have and still don't seem to be able to use it properly.

I would like to know how much it costs smaller (chinese) companies like GPD to develop one of their typical handheld devices. I guess not much more tha these 3 Million dollars the article mentioned about that Atari Console..
 
I wonder if the AMD R1000 line could be under clocked and core reduced far enough to fit a fanless handheld thermal envelope....

Yeah, but the difference here is that Pyra & Atari are both crowd/community funded, and the BIG 3 make their own funds, and can waste or make them as they see fit. So when they don't do things properly, it's a blip on the radar for their share holders and not much more. When I look at the Pyra an it's documented history, we can all see where the money has gone, and I often wonder how we are still going to be honest, but that falls squarely at ED's feet, for stretching the funds as far as they will go(and making up a lot of the difference on his own). Then to see how Atari has pretty much pissed away or stolen 3 million, and you can see how being transparent in a project like this is key to community trust, and Atari has no clue on either subject, sadly.

Probably not. Neither AMD nor intel's mainstream architecture lends itself well to scaling down to ~2W where you need to be for handheld use.

If AMD wants into the ultramobile market that intel has effectively abandoned by shitcanning atom, there's a really obvious route. License some ARM cores (four A55s would be ideal) for the CPU, scale down a handful of NAVI CUs to something like 700MHz @ 0.5V, and stick them on an SoC using the same 7nm process they're already using for all their current parts. The absolute biggest hurdle to creating a decent handheld device (not even just for gaming) is the ridiculously closed nature of all mobile GPUs. Nobody can really take advantage of the hardware unless they've got hundreds of millions of dollars and a dedicated engineering team. AMD's cores are (comparatively) much more accessible, and open source tools and APIs already exist which can take full advantage of their capabilities.

The reason the nvidia's tegra chips are kicking so much ass in devices like the switch and jetson nano despite using very old (by ultramobile standards) cores is because the GPU is actually accessible. AMD could do the same (probably even better) with only a modicum of effort.
 
Sometimes I think that these Chips are only so closed source just that nobody sees how much know how the companies stole from each other... xD
 

So this is only a 2C/4T with Radeon 3. It's pretty expensive for what it is. I don't quite understand why this exists.
