There are several other examples of technologie from old technologie, still made in 2020, like the Piaggio Ape (This 3Wheel Light Truck Thing)
or the Lada Niva which was a long time build whit the same technic from the 1970thes, just whit some changes on the Exhaust Cleaning and i think an Airbag..
Or the "VW Beatle " which came from the 1930thes, and was build in Mexico until the 1980thes if i remember correctly....

The Pyra CPU is also not for ever, it is a basic option so the Handheld want be a Expensive Door Stopper until a better CPU Board is made..
Then it maybe Technik from the 2016 in 2025 ^^
 
Pandora (2008 hardware) got a replacement a couple months ago and I use it everyday. GPD WIN (2016 hardware) broken without possible repair, at least by me, gathering dust in a closet.

Yes, Pyra CPU is old hardware because it focused on other features. We all want newer hardware on Pyra but not in exchange of these other features. Also ED remarked, that even if planned today it is not possible to get anything "up-to-date", this is the handycap of such small projects.
 
Yep, and most of that technology is yet to be unleashed on the Pyra. Maybe you can help implementing some of it on this platform...:

The 'ancient' processor it ships with has the capability to do all that. You only need someone (or a bunch of...) willing to explode those capabilities.

Personally, I would definitely pay for a battery powered Pyra docking station with integrated camera & projector to check my agenda on the wall every morning... :D

It could also be argued whether a physical keyboard on a handheld is retro technology on 2021 as well :oops:

Oh I think the CPU is fine. I just feel like that video is a bit hyperbolic as to what we can do with it.

yes. but prepare to tinker a lot before you get it going.
Then for the tinkering bit is to buy an old 3DS, rip out the 3d capable display and connect it to the Pyra.
Then buy also a camera and program something in openCV to detect your gestures (requires a lot of training)

Haha... well, hear me out. The Pandora has a digital compass.... and you can get a neodymium ring on your finger... and then with some software... you CAN get gestures out of the pyra (like swiping left and maybe swiping up).

Almost nothing in that video is possible on the Pyra.

The entirety of that video was faked, and even if some of that stuff could theoretically be possible with an OMAP5, it all required external hardware that the Pyra does not have to do so. Make no mistake, TI was bullshitting the whole way through that marketing video. Some of the technology they were showing off. (like the clear screen) didn't even exist at the time they made this video.

And to make sure you understand what I mean about the tech, here's a list of each of their bullet points with an explanation of why it would not work: (or why it may be possible)
  • Gesture Recognition: Requires a camera the Pyra doesn't have.
  • Projection: Requires, obviously, the projector. That's not really a capability of OMAP5 but the capability of having any sort of video out. Pretty much any chipset can do this.
  • M-Shield Content Security: This is dripping in buzz words. I would be surprised if this has any more substance to it than "Blast Processing" did.
  • Wireless video streaming: Yea, this may be possible.
  • Mobile wallet: Requires NFC which the Pyra doesn't have.
  • M-Shield Transaction Security: See above M-Shield comment.
  • Stereoscopic 3D video capture: Requires two cameras the Pyra doesn't have.
  • Augmented Reality: Requires a camera the Pyra doesn't have.
  • HD video teleconferencing: Ok, this is possible, as it is possible with most chipsets.
  • "Glasses-free" 3D Display: This isn't even trying to make it seem like OMAP features at this point. The missing hardware is literally the name of the bullet point.
  • Simultaneous multiple OSes: While this may be theoretically possible, I doubt it would be possible in any truly useable capacity.
  • 1080p60 HD video playback: God I hope it can at least do this much.
  • Multi-screen computing: Technically this was possible on the OMAP3, so it's no surprise it should be possible with the OMAP5.
  • Content creation: This literally just means having an application that can make something. Everything has this feature.
  • Augmented Reality 3D gaming: Requires two cameras and a 3D screen the Pyra doesn't have.
Once again, I think we'll see plenty of good stuff on the Pyra, but that video is not where you should be looking for any realistic expectations.

Eh no. The fact of whether a physical keyboard on a handheld is retro technology on 2021 or not does not depend on how much you like cutting anything. You could argue whether is practical or not for the use you have in mind, but that's a different story. Also smartphones are not certified for hammering nails through a wall so... If you break your smartphone screen, then you should repair it, not try to use it like that.

I never wrote that was possible on the Pyra, and neither the video does. That video is a showcase of the technology that cpu packs, not a showcase of what the Pyra can or will do. As for the video bullshitting anything... TI used to sell soc back then, so they are just telling you what you could do with that soc. I can design and sell a W16 1200HP engine for cars and say you can build a car that gets to 431kph, but it's up to you to implement it and do it.

Regarding your bullet points and the possibility or not to make use of that technology: points 1, 7, 8 and 15 require cameras and nothing stops you to develop a project and fund it to create hardware and software to make that possible on the Pyra; the same with 10 and 15...

The thing I wanted to emphasise with that video is: that soc was way ahead his time regarding possibilities and technology. In fact, it was designed to do a lot of things no device can do as of now, so saying that technology from 2012 is sad on 2021 (which was what I was answering with my post...) is not very fair. Another different thing is that no one buyed (found interesting or wanted to implement) that technology back then, but it opens possibilities on a Pyra phone.
 
the thing is, the tech in the pyra is pretty mature imo. for a multimedia unix workstation in the palm of your hand, the capacity is pretty much there. i'm talking about basic stuff, networking, processing power, storage and memory capacity, screen, keyboard, etc. i don't see any step changes in the near future, in terms of what the pyra can do*. i consider higher res screens, faster networks and cpu's, even better nubs all minor enhancements, not game changers.

the pyra will become obsolete in unexpected ways. it will probably be "critical" security vulnerabilities who's solutions are mandated but incompatible or unsupported (probably due to a proprietary nature and/or lack of a driver). Ginrai touched on m-shield and nfc - things like this. a drm chip, networking or encryption hardware, or some kind of biometric reader required to establish network connections (or just access facebook).

if you want holographic weather reports the pyra is the wrong choice, it was never a use case.

* what a computer can do is about the software. high hopes for the pyra in this regard, it's a very capable platform.

Don't really foresee that happening any time soon, the only mission critical proprietary driver is the the SGX 3D driver, the kernel driver is open which can and has been modified to work with newer kernel versions. There is a binary blob of course, but it's just strung along.

You should become a marketer. I vote that ED replaces the marketing story on the Pyra homepage with this write-up.
 
I didn't found information about qualification of the OMAP5. So if it is only for consumer application, it is very likely that it is discontinued soon.

In contrast to OMAP3, OMAP5 was especially targeting the industrial and automotive market IIRC, if they've got even a single customer in that field it won't go out of production for a loooong time. The platform is already discontinued, but it should have a pretty satisfactory guaranteed availability.

I had a chat with my TI contact today about some bridges. I asked him about the status of OMAP5432 and he checked for me.
So, the loooong time seems to be over. No more OMAP5 deliverable?

I am wondering why people talk in the CPU-Board thread that there is no need for a new CPU when everybody knows, that the OMAP5 is no longer available? How many OMAP5 has ED left?

I don't think anyone has said there wasn't a need, just said it's too early since we haven't played with the current CPU.

Not sure, but like I literally said in my prior post he said he had enough to fulfill all the current orders and plenty for additional orders.
