Perosnally it has to be dogs for me, I want a pet that actually cares for me, as opposed to one that simply exploits me. Cats are nasty arse licking creatures.

I like affectionate cats. I have had the experience of non-affectionate dogs and non-affectionate cats, as well as affectionate dogs and affectionate cats. I prefer affectionate cats, since they're easier to pet, take care of, and I like their purring. I'm not a very active person, much like cats ;)

Those who say cats can't be affectionate are wrong. My cat was VERY dependant on me - she would try to open the door herself to come into my room and entice me to pet her at least three times a day. You see, my cat learned how to open doors in my old house - there was a flimsy latch that she could jolt loose by fitting her paw under the door and pulling the door at the bottom (it opened outward). My dog, of course, wasn't flexible to do the same, nor does she ever cry and moan like my cat would to ask for entrance into my room to be petted.

However, my dog is still very affectionate. If I am sitting in a room accessible to the dog, if she wants to be petted, she will signal her desire by lifting my arm with her nose. Both my cat and dog were/are very dear to me.

But I still must vote cats.

Oh, and I added a "Neither" option to people that don't prefer either, though I consider a "Both" option unnecessary (if you would HAVE to choose, which one would you choose? That's the question)

Meh, dogs fro me, their proper companions and like best freinds whereas as cats are almost like unwanted house guests to me, they live in your house eat your food and shit in other peoples gardens. (house guests generally dont do that last one, well i hope not anyway)

That aside i do still like cats ive just grown up with dogs and they were like best mates to me as i said.

Cats at least bury their shit.
So they bury their shit on my lawn do they, i dont think they carry spades round with them, thus making it pretty darn difficult to dig the grass up.

How long is it before someone says "Where's the snake/spider/leech option????" just to look different?

Voted for dogs, as although I think cats are cute they seem out to get me. My dogs lovely-I was about to make a 'post' your pets earlier.

I agree. I've had cats and dogs and loved them both, but if I had to choose, it would certainly be cats. Generally they're so much more relaxing to cuddle with their soft fur, flexible bodies and soothing purr. Plus they make for great entertainment - watching a cat navigate its way to the top of cupboard ten times its own height is a bit like watching a feline Jackie Chan. Amazing.

Although I think I might like Monkeys more if they were readily available as household pets. I'd teach it to play Metal Slug.

ahem... sure

anyways i prefered cats a while ago but ever since my mon got a shiht zu (comonly mistaken as a shit zoo), i had a change of heart. dogs are so more energetic and loyal and fun to play with. we potty-trained our dog so she takes care of business outside on her own. i think cats are great for a person living alone but dogs are great family pets.

Dogs are lovely if you like their sheer level of energy and excitement at times. I find it fun, but not something I'd like to live with (of course, some dogs are slow, just as some cats are fast - but the image of the lively dog is much more prevolent than the image of the lively cat). Whilst cats are lovely creatures, and, as long as you can submit to being their human rather than let them be your cat, as it were, are brilliant. And they can DEFINITELY be affectionate.

For me, cats, but I can understand why some say dogs.

Cats for me!

I've got a pair of absolutely wonderful Persians who are the most affectionate things ever conceived, and definitely help reduce the stress levels after a bad day in work :)

I like other people's dogs - i.e. I like them, but am glad I dont have to put up with them all the time....

Cats; I have a cat, he is a bastard though. But the other cats in the neighbourhood that come in (they are all in my house for atleast an hour a day) are all cute and cuddly.

love dogs though but since I own/ look after cats I have to go for them.

We always had dogs, ever since I was a little baby.. including one german shepherd that was the most docile, friendly animal I've ever known - he was a real companion.... I'd never thought I'd want a cat, ever....

... that said, while I was doing my GCSE's (jeez, thats a few years ago now!) I picked up a tiny little stray kitten, no bigger than the palm of my hand, who had been sitting, wet and dirty in our garden for 2 days - she was that small she couldn't be any more than a 2-3 weeks old. I've still got her now; she's no pedigree - just a medium-haired ferral cat.... but she's become a really, really affectionate cat - she loves being petted and stroked, and will always come to me and curl up on my knees while I'm at the computer, she loves sleeping on my bed... her hobbies are sleeping, sleeping, chasing other cats away, being petted, sunbathing on her back legs outstretched, sleeping and eating :)

I vote cats

True story about my dog that sounds pretty unbelievable:

When my dad cooks food, he burns it quite alot, so it sets the smoke alarm in the kitchen off. My dog Mindy hates this noise, so my dad opens the back door to let the smoke out.

Mindy has associated this, and now when my dad opens the oven door Mindy opens the backdoor with her paw to let the 'smoke' out.

I swear I'm not making this up.
