VGA out!?
Are you refering to the green piece of circuit board at the bottem because I think that is more likely to be a jtag cable.. could be wrong though ;)

:)

Looks cool. It looks like the contrast isn't that good on the display though. The blacks look grey and washed out. Is that the quality of the display, the camera or the game that makes it look that way?

How would you compare with a BLU? Same, better, worse?

Ah my bad, I just put 2 and 2 together... the monitor in the background and the VGA looking cable dangling below. VGA output would be cool though, my TV is really high up :p

Well... as it uses the same display as the BLU+... it looks probably the same as on the BLU+ ;)

Nope, if you look closely you will see that there are nine (as opposed to fifteen) connections on the monitor socket. That means that Squidge probably has a PAL/NTSC monitor (old timers will recognize it as the kind of monitor Amigas used) hooked up to his GP2X. This picture has quite a few interesting implications:
  • Since Squidge is using a PAL/NTSC monitor, he is also testing the TV-out support on the GP2X
  • The socket that Squidge is using (at the bottom of the GP2X) doesn't show on any of the white prototypes.
The second point is the most interesting, since it's most likely that TV out is part of the EXT port, it means that the worry some of us had of the EXT/TV out being unusable, because the plug would be where your right hand holds the console, has been addressed: it looks extremely likely that the GP2X will have the EXT socket at the bottom of the unit, just like the GP32.

[Edit]
Nuts, I just realized that RS-232 (commonly used by remote debuggers) also comes in a 9-pin D plug. This kinda puts a hole on my PAL monitor theory :) On the other hand, the socket at the bottom of the unit still makes it possible that the unit will have its EXT socket in the same location as the GP32.

Maybe unless they did something to the gamma in software or the OS or something. It was like on the GP32 when they use the intensity bit and it made stuff look washed out (gamma too high) on the BLU.

That is why I asked it could just be the photo/lighting but not sure.

i just hope you could use an higher resolution with TV out. That would be a major improvement over the gp32 version.

for speeding things up, couldn't you do something similar(ish) to double buffering?

First CPU sorts out the geometry passes it to the second cpu which works on filling the textures and sorting out the lighting and while this is going on the first CPU works on the geometry for the next frame? is there enough bandwidth/cache to enable something like that?

That is really great!

Now all you other devs already devving for gp2x, show us screenshots of your projects :D

I think what you're seeing Dave, is because the backlight he's using for the photo there is the blue screen from his tv/monitor. Doesn't seem like the normal backlight they use for the LCD screen.

I haven't played Quake on a handheld, but I have played Coded Arms. That game was challenging to control. If people make mods of the Quake 1 engine for use on GP2x, perhaps they should include an autoaim feature. I don't know how difficult that would be. I can say that one of the best autoaims I have seen in a game is in Metroid Prime. If you do choose to lock on, your crosshair could always be over the enemy untill you release the button.

wait a minute, you said quake 2 is possible? isnt HALF-LIFE using a modified Quake II engine?
