Great work Reesy, it does work on the BLU+ now. Yet the sound keeps being noisy for me, still crackling. No idea why, DrMD has absolutely clear sound for me.

Reesy

I'm experiencing the same problem as WhiteFalcon. I've set FastMode to OFF and my sound settings are as follows:-

Sound mode: ON
Stereo: OFF
Frequency: 11 Khz
Quality: 16 bits

Any ideas? I've also deleted the config's for each game and have setup each again with your recommended settings. Also, is there a problem with saving these settings globally?

:)

What if the graphics code was redone from scratch with one of your fancy clean and mean ones like in DrMD? I am not asking you to do it, but hypothetically speaking how much would good graphics code speed the emulator up? I was just wondering from the standpoint of how far SNES emulation COULD *theoretically* get on the GP32. It looks like we may have to do with the GP32 for a while longer as there are some potentially serious (battery life, hardware bugs) launch delaying bugs with GP2X.
Uh careful there dude, the Battery issue is still speculative at the moment as no one really seems to know what it is. Easy how you say it that's how bad rumors get started.

wow this really is the best news for the gp32 in a while, thanks Reesy! you did some hell of a good job for a first/second hack of our beloved SNES emu :)

now I can even play Super Mario World at near full speed at 156MHZ  aah nostalgia :D SWEET!

BTW, I think it doesn't matter that much: 156MHZ or 166MHZ, it actually seems to run at the same framerate, though at 166MHZ my batteries run dry within like one hour of playing on my 166mhz certified BLU from gbax.. maybe it's just the batteries: 1600 mah (rechargeables) ??

anyway, nice job there! SNES is not dead yet on gp32 :)  <_< ...

Well the thing with Snes9x is that its very compatible and will play most games. If you took a different view and wrote a graphics core that was less compatible but fast you could probably get a massively faster emulator. This would be the approach I would take.

Would it be possible, in such case, to have an option in the emu to switch graphics cores, from compatible to fast? I seem to recall, when DrMD was in beta-testing, that the Musashi-core offered more compatibility, but less speed, and that the emu could be compiled with one or the other, not both...

I hope I'm making sense, it's 01.45 here...

Unfortunately we're running out of memory on the GP32, the graphic core takes up alot of memory. We would not have enough memory for another graphics core. The only way to do it would be to compile two different version of the emulator, 1 for each graphics core.

although i dont have a gp32, i've followed your efforts from the begining. seems like you've done a great job again! congrats for that. hopefully i will get my blu+ on monday so that i can finally test your two beauties. thanks a lot ... the snes and megadrive emus where the reasons why i bought one last week ... one of the last 30 gp32 ever produced from gbax.com. i'm really looking forward to play on this mean-bean-machine ...

I've only made slight changes to OpenSnes, YoyoFr and his team did all of the work. So they should get the credit.

I just made a couple of changes based on what I've learnt while developing DrMD. I'm sure YoyoFr could have sorted the sound but he moved on to other systems and so lost interest in the GP32.

Anyway congrats on getting a GP32, its a fantastic little machine and I'm sure it will entertain you for many years.

To those who have this new version working on a BLU+, can you please describe the performance to me?

I've been dying to test this out, and should be getting my BLU+ anytime now also. Can someone describe to me what this new version of the emu is like, as far as what the sound is like, how fast the games are, and compatibility?

My BLU+ should be between 160 and 166 I believe, and I keep waffling back and forth on what to expect with the Snes emulation. I'm happy to get ANY, let alone an improved version, so don't think I'm complaining. I'm just anxious to understand how well the games work on it now, and what (if any) tweaks and options have to be messed with for the best performance.

So would anyone be able to explain how well this emu is running now?

(Thanks for any info, and to you again Reesy!)

for a while it worked for me, the sound was crackly like a mofo, but it still worked, then out of nowhere it faded and it was black with a few traces of coloures pixels here and there, and this scan line kept going left to right elimination lines of the colour as it went, i couldnt press anything here. now when i boot up a game in it, it doesnt even load it just does that scan thing. just wondering what I've done wrong?

Well I don't have the BLU+ but my opinion is that it's running a little better already than the last version I used. I havent tried it with a lot of games, so far just Front Mission with the english patch and Cybernator... before my SMC stopped working... (it does that sometimes) which both run slow but playable dispite lack of transparency and a lack of buttons (both games require some compromise in button config) The sound is better although not exact due to previously mentioned issues. Space Megaforce also ran well but the Transparency issue makes the level 3(?) a pain because of the forcefields that build in your path can't be seen. It's just a question of finding games you can play they dont make heavy used of Transp. and dont use all 6 SNES button heavily.

MrDark - Are you sure that your GP32 is still on the way? I mean you've been talking about it for a while now. Not that I want to think you've been ripped off for all that cash without receiving property but it just kinda stuck in my mind "what's taking so long?" and it's not even my money! :p

not sure if anyone's responded to this yet, but i will anyhow.

Actually yeah, it should be here anyday. I don't recall how much of my specific situation you've followed, but it goes like this: I bought the used GP32 from a guy in the UK off of ebay, on about 9-20. It took a long time to get to me, and that's what was going on for all the time that I was on here excitedly asking questions.

I only finally got it last week, and it didn't work, so right away I spoke to the seller about returning it and that same day purchased one of gbax's liquidated last stock on ebay. So really, it was like 3 weeks involving the busted one, and now it's nearing only one week since I ordered the one from gbax. And my money for the busted used one was already refunded in full, thankfully.

So that's why I've been waiting weeks since trying to get this system, though it should finally be finished this coming week. But thanks for the concern! (PS- now you know why I've been so afraid of doing ANYTHING to screw up my new one!)

And thanks for the description of the new emu, classicgamer.

Can anyone else with a BLU+ tell me what's going good and what's not going so well with this new version of Opensnes? I'm so excited to try it out and would really love to know what to expect!

i actually think i was refering to the wrong thing. 16 bits seems to work properly. w/e im kinda confused myself   ;)

IMO, the things fixed are the sound crackling, BLU+ display, and it runs a bit smoother. There are other things, but those are the three that really stand out when playing. It's a huge leap from yoyo's version, but I thank them both for making this baby happen. My advice is to memorize the best settings and add them accordingly while playing each game

Oh yeah, it was a mess. Laced with expletives, I vented a stream of frustration as, twenty minutes after opening my long-awaited used GP32, it didn't even turn on and I was desperate to hear that it was my fault somehow. Turns out it wasn't, but thankfully most of the money was evened back out and we untraded.

I now await my actual NEW system, which I'd been upset at originally losing out to (Gbax's liquidations started just days after I bought the used one, for $250 no less).

So in that time, to hear that Reesy was picking up the Snes emu again, the one I was most excited about to begin with, has made me really curious as to its new improved performance. Can't wait to try it, and my GP32 in general. It's only been like 3 weeks since I committed to buying one, after all!

dude, the anticipating always rapes me while I await a new system in the mail. Fucking post office should recognize that contained in the package is a gp32 and rush deliver it in the night

Quick Question for the pple who say saveing works ^^? Is it the sram thats working for everyone or just the save states or both? For me its just the save states. I cant seem to save useing sram but the save states work fine. Kinda wished it was the other way around im not really into useing save states on games like Zelda.
