Anyone Into Shenmue?

The most obvious example of this is the final chapter in 2, it is mostly just a ultra linear (albeit it very pretty) video.
You mean coolest gaming experience ever? Yes. Yes, it was. Not a single bit of that game was rushed. What would have been rush would be them having you fight wave after wave of the same enemy with the same moves and same outcome--with the only result being a longer, crappy game. Shenmue doesn't do that, but that doesn't make it rushed. That entire sequence took an immense amount of time and thought. Linear? Maybe, but the idea was to get you very well acquainted with Shenhua and further the story, which is exactly what it did.

And Shenmue Saturn was pretty amazing. Glad it came for the Dreamcast instead, though. :)

How on earth can you say Shenmue 2 (and to a lesser extent even shenmue 1) wasn't rushed. Just compare the amount of interactivity in Ryu's house to later parts of 1 then to shenmue 2- particularly the final chapter.
You seem to be getting your knickers in a right twist, I'm not saying it was a bad game. Far from it. Just it was rushed to get it out and did not reach the full potential it was originally planned to get to (though this would probally have been impossible to get it 100%)

Shenmue Saturn would have been WEIRD. I wonder just how far they got...Something playable? I hope the vaults get opened in the future.

I also think if it were on Saturn it would of sold less than it did on Dreamcast.

Well, not really. On the third disc when you're in Kowloon, it's possible to go into nearly every room in every building, and each room is somewhat unique (I'm sure there are duplicates, but there are a lot of variations regardless). Shenhua's house was highly interactive, as well.

I don't dispute that there was more interactivity on a smaller scale in Shenmue I (opening closets and stuff), but I can't help but think the gigantic, busy environments in Shenmue II more than made up for it.

From what I hear, Shenmue Saturn was nearly complete. I don't know exactly what that means, but I'm sure they got to the point where you could actually control Ryo and stuff. Plus, the video shows chapters all the way up to Guilin, which is the fourth disc of Shenmue II.

It wasnt rushed. if anything the new chapters meant different pacing, if you were used to the slower pace of the first game the second might seem to forego all that for the sake of moving the story along.

Shenmue 2 was a much bigger game than the first. The only thing i hated about the second one was the long run through the jungle at the end. I wouldn't say either one was rushed due to the amount of detail put into the games. I think with the second one they decided not to put english voices in it because they realised it wound take them to long i'm not sure whether this was the reason or whether it was because people didn't like the english voices in the first one.

Yeah Kowloon was quite interactive though that was one of the first bits to be made- the early videos all showed that video when you first enter kowloon with the zooming around the buildings and all that.

Shenmue Saturn having end of 2 bits- well as said it was originally all meant to be 1 game and that is one of the main bits, they would do the really important/stand out bits first then fill in the gaps in between.

When I have time I should do further research into Saturn Shenmue. Really even though I haven't played a Saturn for years (thinking of getting one though...) this huge 'What if' in gaming history is eating at me. I just hope Sega don't have a accident and damage their vaults....

This is the very definition of rushed.
And they did put English voices in for the xbox one I think.
I wonder what the mainland Europeans got...-English, Japanese or localised...

The amount of time between the release of Shenmue 1 and 2 would have meant a wide difference inthe voice acting especially for english voices unless the voice overs were all done at the same time.

Also most english voice acting back then were rushed anyway so the game could have been spetacular and just have really bad voices.

I'm getting a DC off ebay on the cheap so I'm looking forward to playing this at some point, if I can get hold of it.

Quick offtopic question - does "over 40 'Special Game CDs'" mean what I think it means?

Yup, 'special CDs' are the easiset things in the world to obtain and create, when it comes to the DC. About 50% of my DC collection is on CDR making for one vast and varied game collection.

As for shenmue, gamestation is your best bet, the first appears for around £10 whereas the second sells at £30.

Indeed they are. Best is that unreleased games are available on these 'special CDs.'

Propeller Arena... best. B)

That comment proves that you have NO IDEA what you are talking about.

The original development of Shenmue and S2 was all done in Japanese. The Enlgish dub came AFTER it was release in Japan, which means it has no bearings at all on a game being rushed or not. And the Shenmue series was Yu Suziki's baby, and the whole series had been in development for many years before even the first game was released, so nothing about the series was ever rushed.

Here's what happened with Shen2, concerning the english dub:
When S2 was released, Sega of America decided not to release an Enlgish dub on the Dreamcast, since it was so late in the DCs life they knew it wouldn't sell well. So instead they decided to make it an Xbox exclusive.

Sega of Europe however, decided to release a sub of the game for the Dreamcast. So the DC got a subtitled version, and the Xbox version was dubbed.

It's a pity that Shenmue 3 will never be released. Sammy basically put an end to that when they bought Sega out.

The Sega that I knew it is dead now. RIP

Have you seen the Kikizo article? Honestly I have mixed feelings about it. I've found the Shenmue community to be overly gullible when it comes to Shenmue III, but this one seems a little more credible.

At the same time--new interview with Yu Suzuki. It really contradicts Kikizo, but at least it shows Yu still wants to finish the series.
