The area that most(not all) would agree that the GP32 stood out was its ability to emulate a large number of machines. It did have homebrew games for it, and you could watch movies albeit a bit faffy.

But developing/porting games from Linux has become a whole lot easier/practical with SDL+Linux combo, and its attracting people who are familier with linux.

Media playing is clearly a strong on this device with its Media capablities built into the CPU, and GPH are putting a lot of time and effort into this.

I think the GP2X is a better all arounder and its clear emulation is not the mainstay it once was.

I have to say I think that homebrew games will do alot better on the GP2X than they do on the GP32. Because there are lots of really good ones that can be ported from Linux.

Whether this poll is won by Homebrews or Emulators depends entirely on if you post it in the Development or the General forum. :D Media playing is really done just as well on smaller more compact specialized devices with bigger displays, and the GP2x's advantage is that it can do this AND run games-- hence the button config, D-pad, OS and API. If you want a media player alone there are better options just for that. The gaming possibilites are really what make it.

Personally I am getting one primarily to develop games for it-- but I am also greatly looking forward to playing some of my favorite MegaDrive, NES and NeoGeo games on the go with it, and I think that'll be the greatest appeal overall for most users.

Its hard to choose just one, I got it for all of those reasons, but if I had to choose just one it would have to be emulators. I just love the classics.

I predict a similar pattern as on the GP32 - i.e. during the first year, we'll have a period where, without a doubt, people get most excited by emulators as they're ported over from the GP32 or Linux versions, and are found to run at least as well, and with a bit of luck a substantial bit better.

Then emu development will start to become much harder simply because those devs who were interested in a given system will have already tried and either succeeded or failed to port it, with a few notable exceptions of "extreme" systems (e.g. SNES, GBA, PSX, and in all liklihood, Amiga... possibly x68000 too, but I'm a litle skeptical that'd ever come off tbh), at the same time as those who were developing games start to finish them.

Furthermore, after a ceertain period of time, people started with the GP32 to become somewhat more interested in native games - probably the turning point being 2 GBAX competitions ago or so - and less so in emus, seeing as they could already play their favourite game to a greater or lesser extent. Same thing, in all liklihood will happen on the GP2x.

The BIG difference is that the 2X is just under twice as fast as the GP32 out of the box (excluding the second processor - give the coders some time and it will be 3 times as fast, but time will be needed), so that means there's probably going to be less need for optimization, and therefore the rate this pattern occurs will probably be somewhat faster on the X2 than the GP32.

I'll probably be wrong, but hey - that's my 2c :)

I voted for homebrew but I believe that emulation will still be its biggest reason people will by the GP2X. Lets face it even if homebrew takes off at a speed and quality never seen before and we get 200+ original games for the GP2X one good emulator can easly best that number if the user knows where to find the games.

I'm all for homebrew as I'm a dev myself but I think that most if not all buyers will be putting more time on emulation then anything else. There's a lot of people who just want to play emulated games for free but I hope that there will still be a demand for commercial GP2X games. If there are no demand then a lot of devs will chose not to develop/port to GP2X.

I'd say emulators but then I'm a real retro nut :D

Hey, you need to fix your animated gif to have a Tac-2's ball in place of the stick for C=64 and Amiga. :p

I hated Tac-2. I was in the Wico camp :p

I will not vote for a very simple reason.

I think all of the three uses of GP2x will "rule the roost" equally. The GP2x is too versatile to categorise this way.

Too fragile?
Wico redball can take any punishment and still work perfectly. An old swedish computer magazine once wrote in their review " "If there ever was a World War 3, the only thing that would survive would be cockroaches and Wico Redballs."

I hated those wico sticks. The handles were too long and required so much throw distance that they were sloppy and imprecise. Also because of the long handle and big base your wrists and hands got tired from holding it.

Atari 2600 sticks all the way :)

Hehe, either you like short throw or long throw. It's just a matter of taste. I like the wico because it feels just like a real arcade stick. Wico is also the maker of the famous redball arcade stick so the resemblance is no mystery :)

i didnt grow up with those, but i like the happ bat top comp and 360 sticks :p
