Didn't want to clutter up general with this and tbh most of you guys are the scene hardcore anyway so it's your opinions that matter to me.

I was, in fact still am considering buying a GP2x. The only trouble is with a new baby and the fact that some c*&t tried to nick my motorbike just before xmas doing a few hundred quids worth of damage I can't spend money just because I fancy a GP2x.

One reason I wanted a GP2x was the PMP aspect but having picked up a bargain clie TH55 on ebay for a mere 85 quid that satisfies my PMP needs.

I am therefore considering skipping a generation and not buying the GP2x but waiting to see what comes next from GPH or AN Other (Ninja perhaps) if the scene swings that way.

As much as the GP2x excites me (purely from a geek point of view Sam) I have yet to see a compelling reason to buy one. TBH the GP2x specs always were a little less than I'd hoped for. For one thing the Amiga may be still too much for the GP2x to emulate properly. Of course if SNES and PS1 emulation get much better or some awesome homebrew appears then I may be justified in getting one.

A question for those of you with GP32s is the GP2x that much better or do you still find yourself using the GP32 a lot or if you don't use the GP32 is the reason you use the GP2x purely because it's new and different?

Finally am I alone in my view of possibly hanging on to the GP32 and waiting for the GP2x sucessor?

WHY THE FUCK DID I QUOTE HIS ENTIRE POST TO SAY THIS I AM SUCH A DOUCHE
Well, if I was you I'd wait for a bit to see if anything picks up, though bear in mind there's already a psx emu whoch plays ff7 at 20fps (without sound)

20fps seriously!
That is awesome, what is the speed like with sound?
Is it glitchy?

ff7 is all you'll play out of it though, bear in mind rpgs aren't exactly taxing on the processor.

just between the thread and me, the gp2x has been disappointing in almost every aspect except for community and developer support. there's a lot of work being done even though the console itself is not a huge leap forwards. the extra two buttons make emulators a little easier though, but as you have PMP already perhaps you should wait it out a bit.

I dunno.. I bet FF8 and 9 are pretty taxing...

I could do without my gp2x,while it sure has some great features such as awesome Neogeo emulation and pmp stuff i´m still disappointed with the build quality (cheapish) stick(too tight, 8-way sucks, even the Zodiac´s is better) and Display (scanlines, ewg...).
But skipping a generation?
I don´t think there will be a new comparable handheld soon...

I've been following the SNES and PSX gp2x threads quite closely and you're being slightly optimistic with the 20 fps here aren't you Goity. The wiki GP2x PSX page still quotes FFVII as

"Barely Works" and

"Noticeably faster w/o sound (still slow). No more flickering of square-enix logo, however the music is totally unsynchronized in intro movie: fs 5 at 274mhz."

If zodttd can get PSX to 20 or 30 fps as he seems to think he can with the optimisations and Assembler Core etc then I will part with some cash but until then my GP32 which is stable at 170 mhz will have to suffice.

Actually Slightly OT but I was playing Populous on DrMD today and it doesn't slow down as much as it used to on my old Amiga 500 when theres loads of people on the map which I found quite awesome :)

The 20fps comes from Zodttd's word of mouth. This is in the latest version.

I am slightly dissappointed myself with the hardware yet there isn't much out there that matches it.

In your situation, I would definitely wait to the whole thing picks up or a new generation is released. Since F-day is going to happen on the GP32 and maybe the GP2X and that current apps are ports from GP32 (mostly), you are not losing out on much.

This is basically the same conclusion I had come to.

I am as I've already said keeping a close eye on the SNES and PSX emualtion as the thought of playing SNES and PSX RPGs on the move is very appealing but as far as I can tell the GP2x SNES emulation is at the moment about comparable to the GP32 and GP2x PSX emulation has a long way to go.

PS I'd forgotten about Fday momentarily too :)

No and no.

Granted at first there wasn't much reason for me to be using the GP2X other than the novelty value, but now I can't think of a single good reason to pick up my GP32 over my GP2X. Every emulator that I played regularly on my 156Mhz GP32 (Megadrive, Atari ST, PC Engine, MAME) has more-or-less been surpassed on the GP2X already. Plus it can emulate Neo Geo CD and MVS, which is a HUGE plus for me.

So no, I wouldn't pick up my GP32 again and I don't use the GP2X just because it's 'new' and 'different'.

Should you get one now or wait for the GP3X (or whatever the hell it's going to be called)? I don't see the point in waiting - it's already surpassed the Gp32 in my view and things are only going to get better as more devs get to grips with the system.
