But the question there still remains, if you want 3D why not just get a much better supported PSP or DS?

go back 3 or 4 years to the GP32s launch

The difference is that it is far easier to program 2d Games and applications. Therefor few hobby devs use the 3d features and with few commercial support, the 3D hardware is a waste of money.

Wow, I'm confused! I just hope that these don't drain support or interest from the GP2X too soon as the scene is taking off nicely.

They make strange decisions these guys don't they?

Still, the mini one looks really nice, just a very small screen that's all.

I can deal with bars on the sides to get a proper aspect ratio. That's not a big deal, since SNES and GBC on the 2X already have them. As for why I don't have a PSP or DS, well, I do have a DS. But the main reason I'd pick up one of these is to tinker with, if there was an open SDK. If there's not going to be one, they can fuck off and die.

Yeah you can have bars. Because the vertical resolution is 272 on these you get a border all around in 1:1 making the emulated image much smaller than when it is running on the GP2X. Then you are back to stretching again giving pixel distortion and blurring even if you maintain aspect by filling vertically and leaving the side bars. 320 x 240 really IS pretty ideal for emulation. The only thing better would be 640 x 480. This way you could do an even 2:1 doubling to eliminate fractional scaling distortion. You would then have the higher res for other stuff.

What strange decisions? the XGP isn't being made by the same company as the GP2X.

well, when the xgp is based on the vrender3d(as assumed), and uses linux, most gp2x stuff should run on it.
the mini is very apealing if its realy only 150$.

2 things about the big XGP:

1. For 3d you're better just going with a PSP or DS, lets get serious, homebrew 3d is always pretty crummy, But the hardware'd be great probably for emus for newer systems, but I don't know if anyone'd be up for the huge task of a n64 emu.

2. EXTREME GAME PLAYER sounds so, so lame.

That and the analog stick on the large one. Great for 3D, pants for 2D and emulation. At least the PSP has a d-pad too. The large one seems redundant, to much like the PSP in features, not enough like it in game support.

The small one is OK but I would rather play games on the 1-1/4" bigger GP2X screen. My eyes aren't that good at looking at that small screen.

Any shoulder buttons on the mini one?

But where are the specs?!

The mini has the compatibility with GP32? So what it does mean actually - the same resolution (320x240), the same clockrate, the same chipset? It's somewhat hard to believe with so small screen but not impossible.

For the "big" version it's more "3d" oriented but what are its capabilities in that regard? The 1.5mln. polygons/s actually means nothing as it might be just 100K/s in a reality. What is a fillrate, features, planned available titles and the stick is really analog?

The 300$ pricetag is quite high and it will not sell even if it is superior technically then PSP.

Again why there is no version similar in size to gp2x? Perhaps company was splitted with apropriate "noncompeting" agreement?

At least it does seem that XGP will be selling something. The mini is kinda cute - it must be based on the Arm9 cpu so I'd be actually interested if the lcd resolution will be known.

omg...my mistake that will not 'compatible with gp32'
sorry :(

Just emphasising this incase anyone missed it.

Personally, I quite like both designs. If Gamepark keep them open to homebrew developers, I'd certainly consider buying one if the price was right even though I've already jumped on the GP2X bandwagon.

LOL I didn't see that, I definitely wouldn't want either anyway.

The XGP mini is so tiny... It makes me want to buy one... I have pretty good eyesight, but still... That's still a pretty small screen... But then you have pocket chuckability... The D-Pad is nice...

I guess whether or not I'll buy it will depend on A) availability B) release date and C) if I can secure the $150 (being jobless doesn't help, except with my schoolwork)

To me it just seems like a shame that there's a whole bunch of new hardware coming out, when the 2X has only really just started taking off... I for one haven't the money to go investing in anymore hardware at the moment, so I just hope that when either the XGP, or preferrably the Mini, are released, that support for the 2X won't tail-off, like it seems to have done for the GP32... :(

I really like them both but I think that I will go for the XGP Mini. I have a PSP so I don't need a handheld for commercial games but I'd rather appreciate portability (so that it can be easily carried around and used as an mp3 payer), a very affordable price (150$ price tag rocks) and if it is true that it is fully compatible with our beloved GP32 then I think that there might be a future for such a bright idea. The other XGP also looks good but I really don't need another sophsticated commercial machine (I don't know if that definition is correct since no commercial games are known until now.) with solid for a handheld size.

If the screen in the mini is indeed the 320x240 then it will be very good machine. If not then... oh well...

The perspective of scaled down 320x240 to something less isn't exactly great. That will true even with bilinear filtering (I doubt there will be something better like a bicubic).

Remember that 320x240 is the best resolution for emulators and ports. Anything different (especially lower) and display quality will go down. With bicubic/supersampling filter it might be passable but it's very doubtful that such sophisticated scaling would be supported.
