Noone mentioned Battle of Britain yet? It makes me proud to be English.

Never even heard of it...

Das Boot is great, recently bought the Directors Cut version. :)

yeh, Das Boot is pretty good also. I'd like to mention "Downfall" as well, I remember the artillery bits in that put Saving Private Ryan to shame. (although the camera work in SPR is top notch).

Off the top of my head:

Bridge too Far
Bridge over the River Kwai
Das Boot
Deer Hunter
Full Metal Jacket
M*A*S*H
Catch 22
Where Eagles Dare
Dirty Dozen

Oh and just perhaps The Great Escape.

*edit* ...and Good Morning Vietnam

I was tempted to put that too, but the book is so much better I couldn't do it!

Very true but as that is often the case with film/book comparrisons I let it go.

The book of a Bridge too Far is amazing too BTW.

I totally second M*A*S*H and then I have to add thin red line! That one was really weird. Kind of surreal at times... Oh and if you are ever in need of a good war movie just hook up an xbox 360 and play some call of duty 2... that games made me totally believe I was right in the middle of it and doing some nazi-ass kicking.

Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence - David Bowie, a kick ass soundtrack and lots of japs. What more do you need in a film? If you don't like screaming japs you could always check out some screaming, time travelling germans in Biggles: Adventures in Time. Der Untergang is meant to be really good, however I haven't seen it yet.

It's not a film and it's full of american propaganda (america won WW2 all on their own you know), but Band of Brother is decent enough.

All of the other good ones have been mentioned already. You should check out The Top War Movies on IMDB @ http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Genres/War/ for some more suggestions.

The Eagle Has Landed, The Longest Day, The Unknown Soldier (by Edwin Laine, finnish), The Winter War (by Pekka Parikka, also finnish), When Trumpets Fade (nasty), A Midnight Clear, Tora! Tora! Tora!, The Dawn Patrol, Guns of Navarone, Bridge on the River Kwai, All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), Paths of Glory...

How could I forget The Cross of Iron. Enemy at the gates is great, too. As is Kelly's Heroes. And Big Red One.

Silly list, that Channel4 thing... Something like Casablanca there... It's not a war movie, it just takes place during wartime. Same for Born in the 4rth of July, IIRC... Gone with the wind? It's about love, not war...

And Troy is just a bad film. :p And Rambo?

Some classics. Ice cold in Alex. The Dambusters. The Cruel Sea.

Modern classics. We were soldiers, Full metal jacket and the awesome Blackhawk down.

The Birth Of A Nation
Dude, that is a Kukluxklan movie... wtf? I wouldn't consider this a war movie but rather white supremecist propaganda bullshit...

Ah man, what's so bad about Rambo? It's a classic. Sure, the fact John Rambo is a one man army might be a bit far fetched, but the actual theme of Vietnam Veterans isn't that bad. :)

Ah true, while the Birth of a Nation was very controversial and had explicit racism, it did make it's way into the top 100 American films list voted on by the National film institute. While racist, it was valued for it's innovative approaches, such as new effects, lighting, artistic portrayals...such and such.. for it's time...

KKK<Chinese mafia...
