What computer can i get for around 550-600 quid?

Ive just been given a small amount of money from my school to buy a computer.

Im looking for a whole computer (That is, just the computer, no keyboard, mouse, monitor etc), rather than parts. Thanks

they gave me 250 GBP, im putting some of my money ontop of it

But that was third place prize, first place u get 500 quid, second place 330 quid.

You could try... Dell (gasp). They do very good value PCs, but their support is terrible.

All the cool kids build their own, anyway. For that, you could buy my current PC (AMD Athlon X2 4200+, 7600GS) and a 17" flat-screen TFT. It's not difficult, either.

at the end of the academic year, the top 3 scorers are given prizes.

It's calculated not just on end of year exam results, but also your grades. If it was just on exam results I would have got top, but my behaviour grades arnt that great.

Just to add a spanner in the works, You don't say if you require a laptop or a desktop computer, Though you description does sort of point towards a desktop machine. Have you any idea what the main uses the machine will be used for ?, And how much change are you expecting out of your £600 ?.

Desktop, yes.

I would like a dual core computer, 1 EDIT:Gig of ram.....

I know very little about computers, which is why i am asking you guys :p.

I'll use it mainly for doing other tasks, but also i dont want to rule out playing games, Im sure i will want to sometime.

For £561, I see:

Athlon 64 X2 4600+
1GB memory
NVidia GeForce 7600GT
300GB HDD
DVD+/-RW

More specs on request.

You could also get a proper sound card for £20 more.
And if you only got a 4200+, you could get 2GB memory under your budget.

Golden Electronics

Their build quality and reliability aren't brilliant, but their support is great.
(Which means if you just expect to return it at least once, you'll be fine :p )

I really wish I was informed of this before I bought my PC from parts. I really do.
