I've spoken and socialised with cTrix in real life (He's usually found at all the chip tune events), he's a great guy who appreciates older technology. I showed him the Pandora, he said he would have gotten one however it stopped with Craig when he was causing a mess so there goes that. Maybe I can convince him to get a Pyra ;)
 
You really have to appreciate the stuff these guys manage to do with the older hardware. I wonder how much competition cTrix has from guys who do similar stuff on the Megadrive, it's pretty impressive by the looks of it:

What you did on the Amiga in terms of demos was much more impressive that what they show on the SNES, though. 
 
Yes but its all relative. The SNES has a weak CPU, for example. I think that Titan demo uses some tricks to break past what was commonly understood to be the maximum simultaneous colour limit of the mega drive.
 
@ekianjo: Obviously the Amiga was better, it was a PC (by our current definition of the term) after all ;) .

I was just impressed with how these guys manage to take any old hardware and push it new extends like that, especially the old 16-bit consoles.

The Amiga's hardware was way older than the SuperNeS (The Amiga was designed in 84/85, about 5 years before the SNES), and it was clearly weaker in terms of graphical capabilities (on the paper). Yet when it came to the demo scene, a number of demogroups were able to make use of the special architecture of the Amiga to get it to do what was not possible otherwise. So, all things considered, the demos on the Amiga are still way more impressive than these SNES demos. 
 
Yeah, but the Amiga was designed as a high-end microcomputer, while the SNES was built to a budget. The hardware of the Amiga for the time is still very impressive, but consequently demo coders don't need quite so many hacks to get impressive results out of it (although I'm always impressed what those guys produce on any retro hardware tbh).
 
Impressive what you can get out of an old SNES, even more impressive for an "sample only" machine, unlike the MegaDrive that was able to produce it's own sounds. ^^

a500 release date was 87 so design time of 85 probably not far off but the a500 had a dedicated sound processor , and a dedicated graphics processor as well as the 680016/32 bit cpu. so really it was more powerful than the consoles.
 
Thats cute, but huge -ve on using a Sinometer :eek: Worst piece of kit ever.

I still love checking into the demo groups nowadays.. it amazes me they're still at it, but it sure hits you right in the nostalgia bone :)

The Amiga 100 had the exact same hardware at the 500 and was demo-ed in 1985. What they did later is just revision of the hardware but none of the design actually changed until the 1200. They changed the ROMs between the 1000 and the 500 but this was only for the OS part. 

The 68000 is nothing very unusual for the time, the Genesis/Megadrive was using it too, and the Neo Geo had two 68000s on its board, too.

Sure, the graphic chip of the Amiga was advanced for the time, but the SNES graphic chips were way more capable. Let's not pretend the Amiga remained at the top of the game, hardware wise, for like 5 years. What made the Amiga very strong is that people knew how to exploit the machine to the max, outside of what it was even supposed to do.
 
They are just using the oscilloscope as a display. The demo part itself sure uses a CPU. It's not running natively on the oscilloscope out of nothing.
As I understand it, it's rendered (using a CPU, admittedly) to a sound file. That sound file is freely downloadable, and if you play it into a scope in X-Y mode that's what you get. I think that video version was probably played through a PC sound card, but you could play it from sufficiently high-end tape well enough I'd hope.

So you can play it back completely without any CPU, which was all I meant. Not that a CPU wasn't involved in its production.
 
Yes you're right, but whatever you saw on the Osciloscope was already pre-rendered on a PC and just translated to that sound file. So it's not like the Osciloscope did all those graphics by itself.

Here's for an example a port of Quake that's apperantly running on an Osciloscope, but as you later see it's just a modified version that runs on a PC and translates the graphics mesh to an analogue signal (that's saved in an audio file) which can be displayed as vector graphics on the Osciloscope itself:
