Closed Source Ports

We have someone looking at the platform in his spare time, but the
fact that it is a different processor architecture, and the limited
screen resolution, means that it isnt likely to happen I am afraid.

The costs of porting to a non-x86 platform are quite large for only
limited returns. I really do wish that O.P. had been x86 with a
slightly larger screen and we would already be releasing things for
it, I expect!
There you have it from the horse's mouth- that would be Michael Simms' response in the matter and you're looking at the gent doing it in his spare time (Heh... Need to see what has come of the Bandits check-ins he was going to do for me so I can make sure it goes gold here shortly...). :D

As for his remarks about "isn't likely to happen", I'd take that for his being cautious about the whole affair rather than making official statements. LGP's still a bit up in the air and he's not committing until I demonstrate the results of what I've got in my possession for rights access. :D

Doom: Fall of Mars

6suu4g.jpg

Discovered this today courtesy of crunchgear.com. It's like Diablo with a Doom skin, very cool. Windows only right now, and not much more than a concept/demo. But he's planning to rebuild the engine from scratch and really make something of it.

I emailed him today, gave him the Pandora pitch and told him the game would have lots of appeal here. I kind of hinted that if he's writing things from scratch he should make his code portable.

Get it here:CODE

The Game looks really funny ;)
I only hope, that they didn't use DirectX for Rendering or something like that. Then, a port would be too difficult.

hmm how about an "official" port of doom 3? that would probably eliminate licensing issues over the shadowing? worth it not worth it?

I think this thread is for things that are underway, not ideas.

But, the id Tech 4 engine [Doom 3's game engine] is set to be released under the GPL sometimes this year, so a port would just be a matter of porting the engine, buying a legal copy of the game, and shifting the appropriate data files into the appropriate locations.

I realize that... even so they can't release that shadow code... from what I understand so it might look a tad different

sorry got mixed up on the purpose of this thread

frankly, i am not quite sure why you would want doom3s stencil shadow volumes on the pandora. actually, that would be the first thing i would scrap from a port. but that is just me.

I've heard back from the developer of Doom:FOM. Turns out he's been following Pandora for a few months, but porting the game hadn't crossed his mind. Until now, anyway.

I recommend that any Windows users grab it and have a go. It's very much a WIP, but lots of fun.

They're aware of the demand for it. :) From their contact page:

Iphone? Pandora? Thanks to those of you who have suggested ports to mobile platforms. We hear you, and we'll see!

Any chance we could get 2D Boy to port World of Goo to the Pandora?
As gruso pointed out, they're aware of the demand and a couple folks from our community have talked with them directly and with the gent that did the X86 Linux version. They're unsure about whether or not the machine could handle all the physics calculations (there's quite a bit of FP operations in World of Goo supposedly...) and they're waiting to see what one is capable of doing before making commitments.

That's made me think... An awful lot of people are posting the content of emails that devs have sent them. Are the devs aware that these personally addressed replies are being posted on a public forum? I'm sure the majority don't mind but, legalities aside, it might be courteous to ask them if they mind their response being made public.

Opps I forgot about 2D Boy answer already. Ok then I have another game I would think to be cool to have.

.kkrieger
http://www.theprodukkt.com/kkrieger

Screenshots

Its a amazing 96kb sized 3D FPS with great graphics. The game only takes about 10 minutes to Finish and have pretty good action. There is not Linux port that I know of.

Anyone here intrested in .kkrieger?

Also anyone interested is seeing if we can get the guy over at a site called Useless Creations. To port some of his 3D Screen Savers to the Pandora. A few of his screen savers are even interactive. Here the site: http://www.uselesscreations.com/

While .kkrieger is a fucking awesome demo, it's just not worth the effort of porting it to Pandora and I'd also guess it's probably very impossible.

Heh... Michael's not one to mind that sort of thing. But it's very probably a good thing to ask first. In the case of the remarks I am making, you're getting it from the horse's mouth. I am one of the devs in question... :D

I'd hesitate to say that "it's not worth the effort", but it's more off into the "unlikely" category, because I suspect the minimum machine's pouring smoke out it's grills as it melts down. ;)

Their screenshots of mobile device stuff, on the other hand... If I don't get to it here in a couple of days here (I am a bit busy...obviously...) someone ought to go ping them about the new playground for 'em.

I think kkreiger is less likely to ever work because its probably coded very low level since ive always seen it assosciated with demoscene stuff
