Ok, in brief, I was installing a Home Hub for someone. They were using Avast anti viris/spyware (Obviously with windows crap turned off) However, the BT HomeHub disk came with a free viris protection software, so the person turned Avast off in preparation for this. So I gets the homehub up and running, meaning the PC is now connected to Broadband, and then merrily proceed to install the included antiviris software.

BIG MISTAKE.

By connecting to internet BEFORE installing the antiviris, we fucked up. We took a unprotected pc online (for just a minute or two), and here is the problem.

A whole bunch of crappy ass stupid fucking programs installed themselves onto the pc. I deleted most of the files using My Computer>C:>Program Files>Going into rogue program folders. And most of the crap was sifted.

However

There are a bunch of .dll files which are making my day a whole lot worse, and they refuse to be deleted.

Anyone know how to delete these file?

Cheers Maties,

Your old bud, Nova

Aha, and I go onto this how?

I know you tap a key, but which?

Thanks.

EDIT: at startup

Hang on, what happened to his PC?

I've never used any antivirus protection (apart from windows update when it became available) on any PC i've ever owned and have never had anything bad happen.

How did these programs get onto the PC?

Hold F8 during boot up to boot into safe mode. Actually, you kind of have to pound on F8 before the windows splash appears. From another machine download & burn AVG Antivirus (its really good), install it on the bad machine and run the scan. That should solve most of your problems. And if that doesn't work, get Spybot Search and Destroy.

I guess he had viruses galore on there, only now they have free reign with his internet connection. Probably a lot of downloader trojans etc.

I don't use AV software either and never had a problem, I can only assume this PC's main use was to look at dodgy porn sites..

BTW there's a pretty useful little utility for XP called Unlocker. If you always get that "This file is in use" crap when you try to delete something then give it a shot.

Sounds what I think the PC was used for.

It depends on the ISP. For example, I installed AOL on a old pc, neglecting to install AV software first, and the first thing that happened (before going anywhere besides Google) was a virus infection. I know because windows complained.

Shut the fuck up you thoughtless dick.

The computer has never been used for porn sites. At all. So shut the fuck up, just because you mindlessly masturbate to images because no real female (gasp) would touch you with a ten foot pole, that's not the general rule for everyone.

Unlike you, I don't actually, usually, do that  But who was it who was asking me how to permanently erase porn files from your hard drive, and then complaining you'd downloaded Counter Strike fetish porn from a P2P network?

Oh ya, It was you, you "Thoughtless Dick".

If the pc got hit with downloads that fast, it ALREADY had downloader trojans on there. It could always be download cracks, etc. However, a lot of porn sites install shit like this, so maybe I wasn't such a "Thoughless Dick" after all. FFS. Common sense, man.

I'm not the one who looks like Jeremy Clarkson and hides behind a lion mask...

I've actually had a Windows machine get infected before the install even finished, so honestly your best bet is to download all the updates for it, burn them to a CD, and re-install Windows without a network connection. Install the updates and then connect. AV software isn't a necessity but it's a good idea. Really though, as long as you have all the latest updates installed before you go online, you should be ok.

Adding to the above: as long as you have SP2, you should be OK. Anything fixed since SP2 probably won't be a problem in the hour or so it takes to install the rest of the updates. This is good, since SP2 can be grabbed as one big 250MB package and getting the rest are a pain :p

-load of wank-

I think the point you are missing here, faggot, is that this is my neighbours pc, is just under a couple of weeks old and is a FAMILY COMPUTER used by children who are 8 and 6.
But then, you can't read, being autistic and all, or you'd have seen where I stated categorically that IT WAS NOT MY PC.

Please die, or something equally beneficial to the boards.

And no, you don't look like jeremy clarkson, you look like a fat, fish-eyed twat.

how does that prove the cause was not porn?

Because, besides the fact Keiran (who i helped set the homehub up) has his own pc in his office, the PC in question had never been connected to the internet until the day before yesterday.
