Decent Gameboy Emulator Yet?

The sound is still horrible yes, but they are working on fixing it.There is a problem with sdl sound.

This emulator in GP2X is perfect, but the sound code does not work well in Wiz.

Some coder from gp32spain are working in Lameboy.

http://www.dwedit.org/gba/goombacolor.php

It emulates GB/C games to play natively in the GBA format. Source code is creative commons. Is this possible/worth doing?
It doesnt work now, but maybe it will soon.

It turns out there is a version of the source code made to compile on ARM SDT. This might mean something to someone.

Just a thanks for the link to the good version. I had the prior version from the Wiz archive, and then when I updated it was the broken one. Hopefully other Wiz owners are all coming here to get it, since the archive is still linking to a bad version.

I don't mind the sound so much... It's not like the original GameBoy was ever a treat to listen to, anyway.

When you play in interpolation mode it runs fine, and for as few games as I'd play (maybe 20 GB/GBC games are worth the effort) I'm happy with it running as-is (not that I'm saying anyone should stop tinkering!) My only real complaint is the lack of key-mapping, because every once in a while I hit the A button which is linked to changing video to double size, and doesn't go back to interpolation without entering the menu. I'd just like to get that function moved to somewhere away from my fingers during gameplay!

As usual, the forums here are a great source for Wiz owners. Thanks for the link Rivroner.

If you look up a few posts above, Neil posted a fix for the quickscale button if you don't want it mapped.

You can map the other keys with this fix also.

I prefer interpolation, but you have a bit of the green menu left on the top and bottom of the screen with this setting. (A border sized for interpolation would be nice!)
I've tried blacking out the top and bottom on the menu.png & menus.png files (in the etc folder), but when you turn down the volume (which you have to do!) part of the 'Volume ??' text stays behind. (As only half of it is on the 'game' screen)

Cheers, Neil

Also automatic saves don't seem to be working on this version, but they were on the old version. :(
Edit: I've just found out why, the 'saves' folder was missing. I just made one and it's saving fine now. :)

If you're looking for an alternative port then no, Goomba is not useful. It doesn't have code to software render GB/GBC because it relies on the GBA 2D hardware for it. Now, if you just wanted a fast ARM z80 core that'd be a different story..

Most people who develop for Wiz won't have SDT, it's expensive.

I've found the older version of Lemonboy lurking in the depths of my hard drive, so I've posted it here: (Before I lose it again!)

http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?/topic/50414-lemonboy/page__pid__773075__st__0&#entry773075

This runs a lot smoother than the newer version that was posted over the top of it on the archive. (Apart from the sound!)

Cheers, Neil :)

Oh, and I've disabled the annoying quickscale that was on the A button, and Chickendung's skin pack works a treat on it. (Here: http://dl.openhandhelds.org/cgi-bin/wiz.cgi?0,0,0,0,50,254 ) It's a shame you can't have a frame on the interpolation setting.

I appreciate your feedback and recommendations for my skin! I didn't realize it would be appreciated...
I may make another just to get some life into the Wiz archive again...

I've always got a soft spot for original Gameboy and Gameboy Color roms. The only emulator I've found so far is lemonboy and it's got problems. It doesn't do fullscreen properly, it's a bit slow and choppy, and the color is a bit messed up.

Has anyone seen any other emulator on Wiz for GB/GBC yet other than lemonboy?

Yes, my good friend! There is an excellent one I have been using called ohboy. Check it out. I can't remember where I found it, but its really excellent.

I agree with OhBoy. I find it's MUCH better than LemonBoy.

I have been playing gbc games on lemonboy a lot lately, mainly because the save state file is small and easy to edit. I'm satisfied with it, will try Oh Boy.
