    Hi all :)

@EvilDragon : what about selling Dreamcast replacement (jewel) cases at your shop ?

I bought Shenmue 1 in a second-hand shop some days ago, and the cases are falling apart...

    Cheers, Magic Sam

People really need to learn not to post things with the discs in the case, at least on the fragile euro cases. Best solution I've had so far is to swap cases with games I don't play much any more. At least you don't have to disassemble the cases at all to get all of the paperwork out and swap it.

I hate the goddamn euro cases for DC games. Most of my cases are broken. Those things will explode if you even look at them. Replacement cases would be awesome, though I don't like putting my games in regular CD jewel cases. They should be made from different plastics then the original ones.
@Magic Sam what kind of jewel case do you mean? The Euro DC ones with blue inlays? Cause other regular jewel cases are readily available.

    Hi @xnopasaranx :)

I was referring to the Euro DC cases, but I wouldn't mind buying Japanese DC cases from @EvilDragon though ;)

    Cheers, Magic Sam

Ah yes, that's what I am looking for as well. I have never seen these reproduced anywhere... I am sure a lot of people would be willing to pay for decent quality fresh ones.

Yep the Euro DC cases are utter shite, can't think of a worse design for any disc.

I mentioned trying to get replacements a while ago on the forum and have never seen any, someone really should do a new batch.

    Hi @Ian J :)

Maybe the companies @EvilDragon is already working with could take care of this ?

I don't think those Euro DC cases would be difficult / expensive to produce, and there seems to be some demand from the few DC forums I browsed this afternoon.

    Cheers, Magic Sam

@EvilDragon: do you know the name of the company who made the cases for some independent DC games (like Wind and Water Puzzle Battles, Sturmwind, Rush Rush Rally Racing for example) ?

Those games are lying on my bed right now, maybe the name of the case company is written somewhere... ;)

Meh... Those look like regular CD cases when you come to think of it :p

Those independent games just use standard Jewel cases.

A redesign would probably be on the cards for those cases, if made today. You could make the lid out of polycarbonate, but those spindles that hold the disc in would probably need to be made differently.

Edit: Yeah, my copy of Fruity came in a standard DVD case. Did the job very well, but it can't sit with my other DC games (at least not on the same shelf).

Xenocider has a limited run of pal cases. Pier solar had a pal case. They can be sourced. Dunno if n.o.s or newly made cases though. But yes as fragile as a house of sand... or shite... I prefer the jewel cases or dvd boxes.

That's funny, I don't remember them being fragile, but the classic CD jewel cases tend to fall apart (what are the hinges made of, I ask you), DVDs ain't that solid either (some did break), but the worst of all has always been PlayStation cases. Damn, what are the odds of them staying in one piece ? :-|| (at least black CDs look cool)

Playstation cases and CD cases (and probably dreamcast cases) are made from unexpanded polystyrene, which is a rigid if brittle plastic. All will probably scratch, detach and possible shatter if dropped onto a hard surface at just the right angle. The problem with EU dreamcast cases is two-fold - their increased weight thanks to their manuals containing so many languages (and coming from the days when games still had proper paper manuals) which often causes the thin bridge between the front clear window (which is thinner than a CD case lid) and the hinge pin to shatter, and the disc holding spines are halved compared to a normal CD because the support holding two discs, one front and one back. Drop the disc in its case, even in quite bulky packaging, and the game disc will simply shear through the top pins. In my experience, a CD treated similarly will probably just detach from the spines, perhaps because they have a slight angle to them.

DVD cases are made from polypropylene which is more pliable than polystyrene and thus tends to bend under load rather than shatter. Thus they feature a different mechanism to hold the disc in place usually which only consists of two halves which due to being in a concave shape are also relatively rigid that require the user to press both parts with their thumb to allow the disc to be removed. This stops the disc from delatching when the case is dropped, which would probably be worse for a disc in such a case since it has much more space to rattle around in and the undocked spindle can scratch the data area, while a free disc in a CD case will probably just scuff up the central area.

That's true for EU dreamcast games - I've never had a disc become unreadable due to it becoming free floating inside the case. But there's scope for it especially with those little shards of spindle plastic floating around once the disc has bludgeoned its way off the spindle.

Well DC games were an other experience for my brother (who owned them) and me : he put'em in a carry case, but I think thin gravel came in or something. Most of them are scratched now. Doesn't really matter to be honest, as we lost track of the console during moving and never found the box again. :( Probably still somewhere, I hope...

@Kev2442 I can't say I had the same experience with playstation games as you. I own over 30 psx titles (all were bought used!) and almost none of them have damaged cases. I think I own 10 DC games, and I think I've got two cases which are still intact.

In my experience psx cases are as rigid as normal CD jewel cases: barely. DC games on the other hand are more brittle than wet toast.

Hi! I'm new in the forum but I just ended up here looking for replacement cases for my damaged Dreamcast PAL games. Could be possible to know what did whatermelon's replied? I'm desperate! :'(

I recently wanted to replace my old and destroyed Dreamcast PAL game cases. I tried to found empty PAL cases, but all I could find were ebay cases that usually cost more than a complete game and I refuse to buy Chu Chu Rockets or similar cheap games and "dismember" them to reuse the case.

    Thank you! ;)
