There's a massive list of games which write sound from the main cpu now... this is quite shocking because I always assumed the Z80 wrote pretty much all the sound. Mad!

Back to the Future III
Bart vs the Spacemutants
Battle Golfer
Battle Master

Captain America and the Avengers
Dark Castle
Deadly Moves
Decap Attack
Doraemon
Dragonball Z
Dynamite Heady

Golden Axe 2/3
Grand Slam
Gunstar Heroes

yay, toejam and earl!

i have however found that there is a high pitched noise that accompanies the music and sounds of the game, pretty sure that wasn't there when i played it on the megadrive!

just though't i'd let you know...

Cool, Thats a whole lot of games!

EDIT: By the way, how did you find this out? Have you just been testing the games?

Well, more importantly, these are games you don't need to wait for the z80 emulation to be in before you can hear something on :)

and out of those games, how many are worth playing?
*crops list*

Afterburner II
Fatal Fury
Fatal Fury 2
Golden Axe 2/3
Gunstar Heroes
Lethal Enforcers
Mega Bomberman
Phantasy Star 2
Phantasy Star 4
Revenge of Shinobi
Samurai Shodown (not running yet)
Sonic 1
Street Fighter 2 Plus Champion Edition
Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage 2
Super Street Fighter
Strider
Toe Jam and Earl
Tommy Lasanda Baseball (Larussa or Lasorda? The former was the better one)
Yuyu Hakusho: Makyoutoitsusen

When Z80 support is added to Gigadrive, an on-off toggle to add speed to games that don't need it for sound would be useful.

i have NOOO ideo wat u just sed..............

but yey...........

In the Megadrive there are two cpus, the 68000 and the Z80.

Usually the 68000 runs the game and the graphics and the z80 runs the sound.

For example the 68000 says to the Z80 'play music track 5' and the Z80 goes off and plays it. Obviously for an emulator which doesn't have Z80 emulation, it wouldn't play anything. This is pretty similar to how the SNES works - the 65816 uploads a program to the SPC700 and tell it to start playing.

However there are some games where the 68000 plays the music itself, and only uses the Z80 to play drums. So for example the 68000 plays a track and when it gets to a snare drum it says to the Z80 'play snare drum'. On an emulator which doesn't have Z80 emulation you would get music but the drums would be missing.

Previous I thought pretty much all were of the first type and only a few very early games were of the second type. However I was wrong, it turns out there are many games which will play at least some music, even if the Z80 isn't running. This is quite a surprise to me.

This is relevant to a couple of types of people, first of all people like me who are writing emulators and want to know which chips do what in each game, and secondly people using Megadrive emulators which don't have Z80 support, to find out if anything will play some sound.

Well maybe, but there only a few games which don't use the Z80 at all. (Decapattack is the only one I can think of offhand)

Of the games where the music is written by the 68000, this is because the Z80 is used for playing the drums. Turning off the Z80 would remove the drums.

The GP32 sound is pretty f**ked at the moment - my code is on my web site (the GigaDrive zip on the source code page) and I have no idea if I'm doing anything wrong.

There seems so little sound code there that it's hard to figure out what 'could' be going wrong. All I know is there is very bad interference on it.

Anyway I prefer compatibility and GFX to sound. Maybe you could ask Robster for his sound code?
