Release HotFix 5 - RC 1 ready for testing!

Dragon -- [unofficial response] TI has some specs up; I forget now, but its on the order.. if you're mixxing OPPs with total disregard to impact, then you can bring the chips life down to 5-10 years of _runtime_. ie: Not 8 hour day days, but 24 hour days. IIRC, running the unit 24-7 at high voltage/speed will still get you 10+ years of use out of it (assuming accurate predictions by TI, who tend to be conservative on such things.)

emnasut -- the next one (we've not named yet; I came up with the Z-Y-X reverse naming count and we went Zaxxon; in my head I was aiming for Yamato for the next one, but I think its up to ED :) Nothing is set in stone, but we were aiming for the next full OS increment to be new kernel and refreshed tools and all that .. a more drastic than hotfix change with a lot of work to shore up. No timeline yet since theres not many working on it (mostly notaz and ED and djwillis when he has time).

ED, is it too late for wifi ad hoc support on HF5?
Yes, but as soon as we have HF5 Final out, we continue to work on HF6 ;)
Can you guys work directly on the wifi driver itself? I thought that was closed-source. I must be mistaken obviously.

The driver was always open, it's just the firmware for the module that's closed, not the driver.

Recent fixes for the N900 included Ad-Hoc support, so it's there but needs to be included into our driver :)

Just out of curiousity, are there any plans when to release the next version of the OS itself (Yia Kungfu? Yarrgh? Y-whatever?) like when you reach a given number of hotfixes or when the kernel gets updated etc.?

Depends on DJWillis, he is the master of OpenEmbedded, but unfortunately, has been hit by real life stress a lot at the moment.

He still wants to get back to it though.

Is there any chance at getting more time zones etc? in the pandora OS. I'm from America/Halifax (Atlantic GMT-4 and observe Daylight savings time). Every time I flash I never know hat to choose and I'm sure none of whats available match where I'm at. I beleive I choose America/caracus but its like GMT-4:30 or something.

Regarding the naming, if you make it all the way around the alphabet, could you use "Zaphod" for Z again? :p

My first post from my new pandora;

I'm running this version of HotFix5 now, as the one mine came shipped with didn't let me stay on my WiFi. The issue I have come across is to do with sound.

The first things I downloaded were Audacious, Fennac and VLC. When I run Audacious it says it cannot find a mixer. When I try in VLC I get no such warning, but adjusting the volume either in VLC or the mixer on the taskbar has no effect---the volume remains extremely quiet. The the mixer disappears from the taskbar. I have tried reflashing [if that is the right term] the pandora with the same HotFix and trying again, but the same issue.

Hm, those are the official ones included in the Angström repository - I could try to grab the debian ones maybe.

Does sound work with games and emulators?

Did sound work before you flashed?

I haven't tried any games or emulators yet. I also didn't get around to trying the sound before I flashed it. There didn't appear to be any programs that could run sound or music files pre-installed and I couldn't get online to find them.

The sound does work, but it seems like its at about 20% volume. I think its a software not hardware problem.

Yie Ar Kung-Fu please.

I miss the community backgrounds. Let's dump Midori and put them back. Unless I can download them?

I just upgraded, mostly to try to fix the slow download speeds I was getting. However, I'm still getting a maximum of 90 KBps, with 60 KBps being more typical. Is that normal?

No, but what encryption are you using? I think TKIP is slow, AES works... or other way round, I forgot :)

Also tried changing the channel?

Those can change things A LOT.

I first tried changing channels and overclocking my router antenna to 251 mW, which did nothing. I'm not surprised, as I see 16 networks in a scan. Then, I tried switching from AES to TKIP, which may have resulted in small gains, to 80 KBps, though I didn't get much data before the wireless stopped working on my Pandora.

For comparison purposes, I tethered my cell phone to the Pandora and hooked it up to the same Wi-Fi network and got about 600 KBps, which is typical on my connection.

There are some router/access points that don't play nicely with the pandora. It is basically the same with my Fritzbox 7270. No matter which chan I use, I only get up to 150 kilobyte per second downstream. Encryption used is WPA2 (CCMP), and no, I won't switch down my network to some more insecure version.

When uploading with the pandora (eg to my desktop) I can get some 650 kilobyte per second, so something is wrong with the communication between those two devices, something that likely requires some driver changes somewhere. Yeah, for the wifi speed there was zero difference for me if using HF1 or HF5 beta4 or anything in between, even a different board in the pandora (exchanged because of a broken nub) has not changed the behavior.

It can't be the access point for me, as I've tried it at 3 different friends' houses, as well as at my university with similar results.

Tried out HF5 RC1 just now and I'm glad it fixed a bug I had before where nothing would work after resuming from sleep mode, BUT now wifi isn't autodetecting anything. I've even tried using the wifi firmware betatest driver, but it's still not picking up my wifi. Any ideas?

Have you enabled WiFi?

It's off by default when you boot.

Either enable it for autoboot (Settings / Startup) or toggle it when you need it (System / Toggle WiFi).

Remember that WiFi needs about 30 - 45 seconds to create that list after you enabled it.

Hi ED, thanks for the fast response! Yes I've got it enabled at startup but still nothing. If it helps, all I've done to my Pandora so far was just install the CodecPack and the WiFi Betatest. I looked up some commands from other topics so I did the op_wifi.sh script and then a dmesg. Hopefully it's alright with everyone if I paste here:

(Btw, does pandora's keyboard have a "ctrl" equivalent?)

Alright I couldn't resist, I reinstalled the hotfix and now wifi is working fine. I hope that error log I posted still helps figuring out what went wrong.

The sleep problem came back though. I can successfully sleep once and wake it up, but if I sleep it a second time and wake it up, I can't use nubs, can't open apps, and restarting the Pandora freezes it.
