Linux Distros

Or better yet at just use BSD (but I s'pose that's not an option in this case).
I love FreeBSD, but I would never suggest any BSD to a newbie unless they were serious about learning about the guts of a Unix-like system. The same goes for Slackware, Gentoo, etc.

Good newb-friendly Linux distros are:
Fedora Core
SuSE Linux
Ubuntu (which I guess you didn't like...)
and, though I haven't tried it I've heard good things about PCLinuxOS.

There are others, I'm sure, but these are the first ones that come to mind. Also, if you are interested in trying a BSD but aren't looking to fiddle with the system at all after installation, then PC-BSD and DesktopBSD are worth looking into, but I'd doubt that even they are as newb-friendly as the aforementioned Linux distros.

If it is running slowly it is, as others have said, most likely the gui. This means that you should avoid getting gnome or kde. There are many less demanding, fully-functional guis for you to choose from.

Hey, I installed Ubuntu onto my laptop last night, but it ran pants on it,

Is it only 3D that is slow? If so I expect it's not using the correct display driver. Ubuntu runs fine for me, although you may prefer Kubuntu. I suspect switching distros may not help, whatever is making ubuntu slow may well make other distros slow too.

It would help to know...

What is the spec, make and model of the laptop?
How exactly is it being slow? Does the hard disk thrash? Does it stop-go-stop-go or is it constant sluggishness? Is it slow at all times? If not then what causes the slowness?

I am a GNU/Linux Zealot, so I want to help you to a better future :D The pain of the initial switch can be intense, but when you get past it you'll never go back.

You'll all recieve a rather violent ass raping if you don't shut it.

I have a strange feeling that I should just back away slowly, like the kool-aid man. It's like a spidey sense, just not so spidey, more ass-rape-alertish.

but why not stick with linux? I had a tuff time switching initially but I wanted it to work so I kept at it and now I can use it effiecently enough to fix most of my problems, and others problems

I just don't think my laptop was made for linux.

I have Ubuntu on my desky PC and I'm loving it, so I'm still a linux user.
