I'm not sure how the 3D will look or work?
If it's similar to the 'vibrating' images then that will just hurt my eyes.

I'll get a new DS anyhow.... I hope it as cool as when the first DS was released.

I think it will be kind of like what x68000 linked to.

@SONY could you please put all those pictures within a spoiler tab? They're cool to look at and all but it's making it painful to scroll through the page.

I'm absolutely certain it won't. The distinction of the new system will be that it will actually feature a 3D effect. An ingenious idea by Nintendo! They obviously don't want to change much about the DS because it's a very successful system. If they simply added more graphics power, the casual market they opened with the DS might not care about it. However, something as distinctive as a 3D effect will turn everyone's heads, especially after all the 3D cinema craze around Avatar and stuff.

I wonder how well their 3D effect will work. For example, will it work sideways? Probably not. Will it work on both screens? I guess so.
I also wonder a lot about screen resolution. The DS has a very crappy resolution. If they use a simple 3D layer, they need twice the screen resolution of what you will see, as I understand it. If they want to sell the new 3DS with the capability to play 3D movies (which would be too awesome not to do) they should use pretty high res screens. That's not something Nintendo would usually do, though, because it's expensive.

I'm pretty confident that this will be awesome. The only way they could mess the 3DS up is if the 3D effect is very crappy and makes normal 2D games look bad. This time they probably have done their testing before deciding to go this route again, though. Red Alarm 2, anyone? B)

Think of the poor Sony engineers frantically trying to somehow add a 3D effect to their PSP 2 design... :D

Some possible details regarding the 3DS...
The main theory it is that it will use a parallax screen, developed by SHARP. This is based on SHARP having developed numerous (if not all) screens for Nintendo portables, and SHARP having released screens like this in the past on phones in Japan.
The tech is being headed by SHARP and it doesn't require glasses.

Surprise! Surprise! SHARP have just announced a new LCD 3D technology that can be achieved, and I quote, "without the need for special glasses". Word for word phrasing also found in the 3DS press release. It's also 'coincidentally' featuring touch screen technology.

The tech is described as a 3.4 inches in size, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 500 cd/m2 brightness, and a resolution of 854 x 480 (wonder why so high for such a small screen?).

Comparatively, the DS lite is 3.12 inches, DSi 3.25 inches, and the DSi XL 4.2 inches. All three systems have a screen resolution of 256 x 192.
The PSP has a maximum screen size of 4.3 inches and resolution of 480 x 272.

This doesn't mean any of this tech will be in the 3DS, but its food for thought.

The new 3D touchscreen LCD tech is capable of switching between 2D and 3D modes, perfect for backward compatibility with the current Nintendo DS and DSi software libraries. And, perhaps best of all, Sharp's new screen features some impressive specs, boasting a 854 x 480 pixel resolution. Screen is bigger than that of the Nintendo DSi (3.25") but smaller than the DSi XL (4.2"). That size backs up previous reports that the Nintendo 3DS would sport a pair of screens smaller than the XL version of Nintendo's popular handheld. Those same reports, which appear to have forced Nintendo to reveal its 3DS plans earlier than expected, also pegged Sharp as one of the manufacturers of the device's screens.

Sharp also boasts double the brightness and ten times the contrast ratio in its new generation of 3D LCD tech. The screen technology's 3D capabilities work in both portrait and landscape modes, and let consumers see images in 3D while taking video.

EDIT: I hope the screens are 4.3" (16:9), but I guess, even though it's still early days they'll go with the ready made 3.4 Sharp screens.
Wonder what the screen ratio will be though?

Well, as the first real update to the DS I hope it's worth getting a new DS for. I'm sick of hearing of new updated DSes and when they come out there really isn't any update at all.

I have to say I would buy one of those. iPad with gaming controls under the swivel screen, brilliant! Might be a little top heavy to hold though.

EDIT: Wait, this is a DS thread, that is definitely not a DS, but I would buy it over a DS.

Oh really? Pity. I had a cell phone from Chinavasion like that, but until I can find the charger I'll be using a different phone.
The phone is an AVS-Something… Still, that'd make for a cool handheld nonetheless...

So I am the only one who that looks absolutely horrible to? Imagine it sitting on that table and trying to pick it up. It would be massively top heavy, which would make using that analog stick nearly impossible. The bottoms would dig into your hands.

True, bit it's a great concept. Everyone is into tablets now, if you could do that with a tablet and have it usable then I think it would sell.

Nintendo 3DS coming in October, this year?

Nintendo's 3DS will be released a full two months in advance of Christmas this year, CVG can reveal.

UK industry sources have today informed us that the platform holder is readying an October launch for the system - which it will announce at E3.

That means it will go head-to-head with Microsoft's own great hardware hope this winter, Project Natal.

News of an October launch was a surprise for the execs we spoke to - as Nintendo had only previously announced that the handheld would hit shelves before March, 2011.

An October launch pre-dates that expiry date by a full six months - and gives Nintendo a three-month run-up to Christmas.

One very senior publishing source told CVG: "It's a surprise - we were expecting it much closer to Christmas. But I suppose it gives Nintendo the opportunity to get it front and centre in people's minds nice and early.

"In my experience, you don't launch a product that early to Christmas unless you're confident in it - and going to spend a lot of money on it. We're reassured that Nintendo is going to give it some decent backing in Q4."

The 3DS allows gamers to enjoy software with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses - but will also play regular DS titles.
