CraigX - I am from USA and I would also be willing pay $500 for the product
Oh that's cool, hey you know Craig doesn't take pre-orders yet but I do. I'll gladly take your pre-order for a Craiginator for $500 (shipping not included) right now.

Are you asking for the clock rate the machine will be running at as default, the maximum official clock rate, or a guess at what the overclocked rate will be?

The last two are already available on the web. The first is as of yet undecided.
I don't think these numbers are really applicable in terms of performance until we get something running off of it. However, some numbers would be nice at least.

I believe hlide did actually comment that he thought a PSP emu would, technically, be possible, although I can't say I quite understood why.

Paraphrasing and probably incorrectly, everything written for the PSP is written using a particular set of calls, so if you can replicate the effects of those calls, you don't need to acutally emulate a software version of the PSP's CPU (which would be impossible).

Firstly, as mentioned, I don't understand this entirely (it sound just like HLE to me). Secondly, I believe he also commented that the changes of this actually being done were second to none.

So assuming hlide is right, the chances of a PSP emu (whether playable or not) might actually be about 0.5/10. Don't consider it emulable, but don't entirely write it off either.

You'd still have to emulate the PSP's CPU in full to run the code, but what you wouldn't have to do is emulate the rest of the hardware as you could do a HLE on the PSP API that all games use.

The problem I see however is that if you wrote the HLE based on Sony docs it would run commercial stuff but you'd probably get sued by Sony for disclosuire of confidential information. So you would have to write it based on the HB-RE docs, in which case it would run a lot of homebrew, but be less compatible with commercial games (but at least you wouldn't get sued so much)

I'd be careful A_SN, just because he's from the USA, it doesn't mean he'll be paying with USD - it could be HKD!

($500 HKD = £31.13 GBP)

By emulate, I'm sure Vince2501 means to say "Can I load roms and play games without bitching about performance in endless threads to devs."

To which, the answer is no.

Even if hlide says he can emulate the PSP, it'll only dash the hopes of people like Vince2501 who would have already downloaded roms of Disgaea and Vice City Stories, salivating in anticipation.

I'll pay 5,000 yen for it!

If he gets a psp he can just do that anyways. Man I do understand why a lot of devs hate emulation. I love emulation, but I also love homebrew stuff. I love seeing a small group or one person pull off more fun and innovative apps than commercial companies. One reason I got a GP2X in the first place, and getting this new handheld.

That brought on a creepy mental image. Thanks, icurafu. Now I got to go stare at porn to clear my brain.

People found out about the important parts of the Sony SDK (the parts you'd HLE) because it's on the firmware and some games left symbol tables to it open. The freely available PSP SDK (not Sony's) uses these functions. Most PSP homebrew uses this SDK. The two PSP emulators out right now emulate the firmware functions. No one has been sued yet.

Most of the CPU would still have to be emulated. A bigger issue would be the VFPU. Still, 2D games don't use it, and a majority of PSP games are clocked at 222MHz. It's probably around the same level of feasibility as Dreamcast emulation.

Looks like the Craiginator could be facing some old competition in 2008.

In an interview with Swedish online newspaper Realtid.se, Carl Freer, former CEO of bankrupt mobile gaming company Gizmondo, said he will relaunch the portable gaming console in 2008.

The Gizmondo would be produced by a Chinese company in Shenzen that would get rights to sell the product in China. Carl Freer claims to have 35 games for the console including 6 new titles. The price of the gaming console could be US$99 and might be free with some wireless operators, he said.

Apparently its had a major redesign , we'll have to wait and see.

About one of the essential included applications: the E-Book/Text/Document reader/viewer.

It would be really good for this to include RTF, HTML, and maybe .doc or OpenOffice text support. PDF would be cool too.

And a real bonus would be reading of compressed files, like "craiginator.txt.gz" or whatnot. I often have multi-megabyte text files.

Will we be using a premade app for this, or developing our own?

The functionality of even PowerVR MBX, SGX's predecessor, was beyond that of the PSP's most advanced graphics features, like acceleration for beziers and skeletal animation, so emulating functionality certainly wouldn't be the troublesome part of reproducing PSP.

Speaking of included apps, what about a text editor? Something small like AbiWord. The device will have a keyboard, and would be great for typing on the go, or taking notes in class.

I would also like to see a drawing program included. I'm not talking about porting the GIMP or anything, but something with support for layers, blending modes, alpha channels, brush sizes, shape, color and opacity. (So maybe a port of GIMP...) Would be great for making quick sketches, with the possibility of making more finished drawings.
Anyone else think so?
