Did you read this

Terrible, this is what, the 3rd death I have read about of people dying in internet cafe's after marathon gaming sessions.

These internet cafe's need to kick people out after a while, or at least enforce some sort of health & safety regulations eh, 40 hours straight this guy was sat at the screen, no food or sleep until his body gave up.

We had a case like that at the uni computer club, 15-ish years ago. Then, it was MUD. NannyMUD in particular (It is still running, although it is a far more sedate place these days). That one didn't die, he just collapsed and people got him away in an ambulance. Twice, with an interval of a few weeks.

Nowadays, I tend to see this as something that comes with personality - Some people are predisposed to addiction, and nowadays computer games are just another thing to get hooked on.

WHen you reach this kind of "stupidity" (sorry but spending x hour in front of a screen without moving is hardly intelligent) no amount of regulation will stop people from dying doing this. That's just statistics.

Addictions are difficult, however, you could prevent him from renting the "private room" for 2 days straight - after all, there's no bed in there

And nothing prevents him form going into another net cafe and do the same thing for 24 hours again.

You just have to understand that there's a big part of self responsibility. If that guy really wants to play 2 days straight, trust me he WILL find a way.

No amount of regulation can prevent people from doing what they want to do. You can just make them crimincal, make what they do illegal, but they will still try to do it nonetheless. That works for all prohibitions, and I think we have seen many examples of regulations to "prevent" things that never worked.

I had a week long LAN party when Diablo 2 first came out. We all took little naps under our tables 15min to an hour occasionally and were well fed. Extreme duration gaming can happen, just need to remember the biological needs.

Think I'm too old for that now though..

Most I ever did was a 12 hour session on Halo 1 co-op.It was that good a game.Plenty of tea and food +beer breaks though so no worries. If im playing an rpg i can play for 5 or 6 hours at a time but i still take breaks for food/drink etc.Im not a lemming or anything.

No, but if you're kicking him out, he'll have to get up and travel - half of the problem was he didn't move... :)

what a n00b. cant even last 2 days in diablo 3. at least he played hardcore

Wow just wow I love gaming but there comes a point where I have to go outside and shoot something ( usually a target plus I live in the country so I can ) at least take food water and bathroom brakes !

bathroom brakes !

I am trying (with hilarious results) to imagine the reasoning and operation of a device that will slow a bathroom down.

You, Sir, just made my day. Hats off.

This is ultimately the victim's own fault, but the internet cafe should also take some responsibility for not checking up on him after it was clear that what he was doing something unhealthy. I don't know why they'd rent out a room like that for such a duration to begin with. In no way is this Blizzard's fault. This could have happened with any game, or really just about anything. People do crazy things.

@ ZXDunny It would be for procrastination and getting rid of unwanted house guests and would work by a nuclear powered explosion engine to zing it around a black hole faster than the speed of light ! :) going the speed of light would slow time down for the one inside and the blackhole for getting rid of the vacuum salesperson
