I don't have a 3D Printer or access to one, but the idea makes sense to me and since my mouse wheel died today, I'd actually love to have a horizontal and a vertical crank for scrolling instead.
Does anyone here know where to get ready made stuff like that you can attach to the monitor somehow or did anyone here make USB cranks already? It could also be a nice attachment/accessory for the Pyra.

You could just replace the rotary encoder. If it degraded instead of suddenly breaking you might even get it working again by blowing into it to get rid of some of the grime on its bare copper contacts.

The rotary encoders in mice always work the same, even the optical ones. You could just hook one up to 2 GPIOs. The system actually just receives simple button press events for each step from them, you could just use two buttons instead as well.
