Hi all,

I got a reply from the main Replicant developer, regarding a possible port of their Android distribution to the Pyra / Pandora.
Replicant is a fully free Android distribution running on several devices, a free software mobile operating system putting the emphasis on freedom and privacy/security. It is based on CyanogenMod and replaces or avoids every proprietary component of the system, such as user-space programs and libraries as well as firmwares.
Replicant aims to be an ethical system: it does not ship nor recommend the use of non-free software.

Many different devices are supported by Replicant, to an extent specific to each device. Basic features such as graphics, sound and telephony (if applicable) are supposed to be working for each device (if not, developers are confident they will work soon).

Replicant is a community-led effort, currently driven by a single developer. Not every piece of software in Replicant should be expected to be fully-featured nor entirely reliable, even though developers are trying their best.

In order to see whether there's some interest from the community in such a port or not, here is a little poll.

EDIT: if you would like me to add more options to the poll, please let me know. And feel free to post your comments in the thread, as it will certainly be monitored by the Replicant team ;)

Cheers, Magic Sam

a newer Android Version for the Pandora???

Yay i like Android..not as the Main System but wonderfull as second System or Thirth OS :)
There are many Android Games who dont work with our Android PND because its simply tooo old :(

I'm interested if dual boot is available :)
As Debian will remain my main OS.

I would love to have Android as my second OS on the Pandora ^^

Sorry for the little off topic but, Is there any 100% compatible device with replicant?

Android is already available on the Pandora ;)

Keep in mind that Replicant is different from both CyanogenMod and Android. Please have a look at the FAQ to see why.

EDIT: updated the quote on first post.

No, I don't think so. Please have a look at the list of supported devices and their respective status.

I check it right after answered here :p. So if they port it, maybe Pyra will be the first 100% compatible device with Replicant?

Replicant won't work on the Pyra without having the proprietary 3D driver though right?

If I'm not mistaken it should work, but without any hardware acceleration (i.e slow 3D stuff...).

@ Replicant team: if you are reading this, feel free to chime in ;)

I will admit there are a few Android games I want to be able to play, like Goat Simulator and Draw Something. Draw Something would work with software rendering though I think.

You could load the driver on a when playing game basis maybe. Or you could install it, still has many things over regular android.

A lot of people develop software on Android, so having a way to use Android that isnt a flat screen most of the time would be nice. I suppose that applies to everyone that thinks flat screens suck.

Just FYI: Replicant for the Pyra is not something to poll for. It will become available as soon as enough hardware is in the hands of developers.
We have Replicant for the GTA04 which shares a lot of kernel code with the Pyra: http://projects.goldelico.com/p/gta04-replicant/
The key difference will be a different screen resolution (and orientation), but that has already been tested on a device with landscape orientation.
And making use of the keyboard is something to learn...
Replicant runs on the GTA04 w/o 3D graphics on OMAP3 quite smoothly:

Hi !

Well, Paul from the Replicant project asked me to test the interest of the community in a possible Pyra / Pandora port, hence this poll...

I am all for it. Even though it may not be the primary OS, I feel it is important to offer as many options as possible. I am still undecided what I will use as my primary OS (probably depends on what works well and I enjoy using, so most likely Debian) but using others is a major part of my plan (VMs preferred, but we shall see what happens).

As far as I know, Replicant is a good option based on their goals, which I feel support some of what ED is trying to do. Official support would be great.
