COVID-19 / Coronavirus Pandemic

So how come that not obeying caused the pandemic to supposedly last longer now according to some people? The poeple who did not obey should have been dead and overburdened the hospitals causing the pandemic to be over sooner, but they're still alive and well and hospitals are empty (with many even taking up choreographed dancing to kill some time).
I think we always new there would be a period of 2 years for this pandemic, about 3 waves. Each wave they'll try to use this flatten the curve method. And hopefully everyone can be vaccinated during that period.
Vaccination doesn't mean you can't get sick, just that you'll be less sick if you would. And this should eventually stop the spread, based on statistics that a group of vaccinated people are less likely to spread covid.

Supposedly there's a shortage of vaccines. I'm going to be noble and not take my dose so that someone else can take it.

I just love being a member of a forum that is so stuffed full of qualified doctors, virologists, political scientists and sociologists. Not to mention lawyers.
What forum is that? Can you link it?

According to our Dutch government, 8 out of 10, 80% is in favor of curfew (they add the neutrals to their figures, and even though 14% is against it, so that would make 104% in total...ah, forget it, our government is bad at math).

A poll done by the Dutch Public Radio NPO says that more than 80% is against the curfew. (at a certain moment the poll even reached 89% against the curfew)

So what happened? A day later, the NPO did NOT say such thing! It now parrots the government (their webpage has been updated by the ministry of truth):

Some news outlets that picked up the news still have screenshots of the poll results:

(these two Dutch areas also had their own polls: 51-49 in favour and 20-80 against nowhere near the "official" 80-20 in favour)

About the curfew: A judge judged the curfew unconstitutional due to a form error. The appeal was done and extended to give the government time to do their thing.
Then it was talked about in the eerste kamer(senate), and within 24 hours, we now have a curfew law that can bypass our tweede kamer (parliament) and it can be a 24 hour curfew too.
While the action feels like they just want to have it their way, and it leave a bitter undemocratic taste in our tea/coffee, as it was "only for two weeks" but now it will be extended by a month; the erosion of our rights is tangible.

Is there any evidence for curfews being effective against the virus? They could easily just result in more people in the same place.

Even near the start of the pandemic when the supermarkets here reduced their opening hours to be able to do more cleaning, I wondered if that was really a good idea.

But it might also be related to other factors. I would think the effect of the curfew would be visible after at least a week, but as you can see the trend already was set before the curfew.
So I would assume there is more of a relation between public holidays and Christmas for the peak. And the lowering trend might also be helped by the cold temperatures, as traveling is less comfortable especially when there is snow and ice.

For Netherlands, note it's a NIGHT curfew. So during winter, we are at home anyway due to the cold and it did not feel as too restrictive. Besides it was not an ABSOLUTE curfew, you could still be outside for work or to let your dog poo.
Also, I would say there is a difference between short and longer curfew.

For short curfew: Yes. It discourages people to go visit each other, as the dinner is cut short and after-dinner conversations is very short. So it does result in fewer visits (from extrovert adults), especially after you get your first fine.

The week of ice and snow is double edged knife (because it was a once-in-nine-years opportunity to skate on natural ice). Too cold to be outside in the night. But during the day it was nice outside and lots of people were doing winter activities (to the point it was difficult to keep 1.5 meters distance because nobody kept to that - too busy playing).

You can't rely on cases for statistics as there's too many false positives, especially in France.
Here, I haven't heard of any real sick person around me, or friends of friends, since september.

I actually recently heard of someone I know who got The Virus. She barely has any symptoms, though. Recently she was here unmasked so maybe I get it too. I do not care much either way. It's about time that I get it, I've been shitting on the measures since a year ago and never even got it, unless it's asymptomatic or something like that.

I'm like the canary here. I live the riskiest of everyone so if The Virus ever gets dangerous I should die first which would warn you all. Acting as canary and donating my vaccine, I'm a real hero!

Your're a shitty canary, if we cannot be sure that it hits you first and hits you hard and cannot be sure that we'll know about it, when it happens. So, sorry, but application denied.

My very very old parents neighbor and friend was just taken to the hospital with a positive test. His wife also has it.

I was originally on the "this is basically the flu," team at the beginning, but after reading articles shortly after realized the deadly potential. There are about half a million people in the US alone, dead.

I don't know how people can deny it now.

If you were in a high risk group (which I doubt), then you might be able to call yourself a hero. I wouldn't call you that, but you could.

Thanks for the thought though. If you do die, please don't forget to let us know.

Talking in-laws of my cousin: Grandmother got sick, covid detected, hospital, dead the next day. Mother and father diagnosed with covid, too. He got sent to the hospital, it worsened there. She's at home in quarantine - no or only light symptoms, if I got that right.
