Why 2 200mhz?

because it's supposedly better that way. I don't know why or how, and I can't explain it. All I know is that according to what they've told us, it's faster than 1 400mhz processor.

Mainly because the SOC (system on a chip) by MagiEyes they're using isn't available with 400Mhz CPU's. ;)

And I don't personally believe it's literally faster - I think what GPH meant was that the ME SOC performed media decoding functions faster than an ordinary 400Mhz chip could do. But that doesn't mean it's faster for everything, i.e. raw number crunching and emulation etc. However in time, it's possible that devs can make it perform like a 300 - 400Mhz chip for such operations, but we'll have to wait and see.

At the end of the day, my opinion is they chose the dual 200Mhz MagicEyes SOC because it's affordable, has low power consumption, passed some degree of reliability testing, already had many good features integrated, and would help streamline the design and manufacturing process.

like prophet said, it's quite possible that devs make it perform like a 300-400mhz Cpu. Plus it consume less energie and all.

people kept saying at the time of the specs release, that they would have happily paid more for a single 400mhz processer and that they would pay more for a touch screen and a vibrating knob thing, ahem, you get the idea. But at what cost would the system have been released at? People power already got us the extra ram which some informed people around here have already said was not needed.

I think the balance is just right in respect of price vs performance.

I think I read that because the 2 200MHz CPUs have 2D acceleration they will outpreform a 400MHz CPU when dealing with 2D graphics. I think it's somewhere on the oficial site. Ok, so I looked it up, from the FAQ:

"Compared to other cpu like Samsung 2440, itel, AMD, the one that we adopted has 2D accelerator that enables efficiency to be enhanced.
Through the hardware test It is confirmed that the only high clock speed doesn’t make movie or game run fast.
We inform you that 400Mhz without 2d accelerator would rather be lower than 200Mhz."

It is all down to cost and the factory needed to make the device.

Only a handfull (compared with the dual 200mhz) of very expensive factories can handle the 400mhz chips.

The unit would have been $350+

More RAM is ALWAYS needed. :)

The extra RAM is needed to play larger games. Not everyone will take advantage of it, but without it some emulators would be severly limited.

i agree personally, but people such as craig were not so sure.

Lets hope that the full 64mb is utilised to prove the point.

I think it was more for Neo Geo/Mame Roms since they can pretty large.. 32mb would have been fine for SNES.

The ram I think was mainly for NG/MAME roms. But A side effect of having the extra ram is that it gives devs more room to play around with to do "special features" that can speed up emulation.

Man that is a pretty bad side effect, sure wish they would have just stayed with 32mb. :p

I rather have the 64mb with the possibility of having Metal Slug on my GP2X :D
