New Gp2x Site And Good News

It cant be a bad thing, constantly improving the hardware/software to give the community what it wants. In time components become cheaper, so they can add stuff and hopefully keep to the original-ish price

So in time they can improve on the original design, this also helps to make new sales aswell as maybe get some peeps to buy new versions of their old stuff.

I'm pretty sure they would make it fully backward compatible. Just look at the amount of gameboy/gba's they've done, I bet alot of peeps sold their GBA for a GBA SP etc

But this announcement will kill developement for the current model.  Why waste alot of time developing  emus and stuff for this one when it is already obsolete before it even comes out?

What the hell are you talking about?

GP32: NLU... then FLU.... then BLU

All fully compatible.

GBA: regular... then SP... then Micro

All fully compatible.

It will be the exact same thing.

I think it's not a bad move by GPH -- it lets people know to buy this machine now to get in on the community and start using/enjoying, then when/if the F-200 comes out just sell your current unit and upgrade if those features are important to you. Win-win.

What is the problem?

GP32... then GP2X, not compatible at all.

Sell the current one and upgrade? That is fine if they are compatible, if not throw everything away again and start from square one like now with the GP32 and GP2X.

DaveC if I were you i'd not bother with the GP2X or the F200 but wait for the F300, no.... the F400... but wait... they will all be a waste of time you may as well wait for the F500... but then what about the F600... I'd say you may as well not bother at all. Like you say they will all be obsolite anyway. Just like the GP32 is.

"PMP, Far Better Than PMP"

wow........(from the new gp2x website, click product then click the second bunch of stuff - far left)

:p

Remember that GPH doesn't use custom hardware and if they would want to relase a product with significantly upgraded specs then this means another different chipset not unlikely from other company (not MagicEyes).

So hardware backward compatibility in such case is none.

Fortunately the GP2x is running Linux and the SDK is focused on common library SDL. So hardware backward compatibility isn't that critical except for projects that are using hardware directly. This is a valid concept - moving platform from hardware definition to a software one. This will allow flexibility however the GP2x's cpus aren't strong enough to forsake using its specific hardware capabilities to an advantage.

The point is not that they are working on a new model, it is that they are talking about it WAY too soon. How about releasing this one first and let it sell for a few years before talking about the "next big thing"? Would make more sense right?

The reason that the GP32 has alot of stuff and support from the community is because it stayed basically the same and compatible for so long. It had time to grow. If GP came out with incompatible hardware every year ther wouldn't be much for it.

If the "new GP2X" is compatible with the "old" GP2X then it will be ok.

How about everyone that recognises it was a bad idea just stops talking about it? That way vapourware won't lead to any more anxiety than seems to be around here already ie. A LOT ;)

NOTE: on the off chance it isn't obvious, all the following information is pulled out of my ass. It was cleaned up a bit before it was posted here, however.

Mr. Fishy, I think you're right for the most part. Dunno why it seems vapory, though.

Assuming the world does not go to hell in a handbasket, let me chart the course of the F200:

Compatibility: Yes, otherwise it's a GP3X.
Speed/Memory: The same. Exactly the same. Oh, sure, maybe an increase topping out in single digits.
Features: USB Host certainly (maybe not 2.0), WiFi possibly, HD never in a million years
Screen: No. No change here - why?
Time Frame: Six to eighteen months from now. It'll need to be designed, undergo testing, and begin manufacture - assuming the capital for an initial run can be had.
Price: up to fifty USD/forty Euro/ 25-30 quid difference. Probably not that much with allowance for time.

My reasoning:
It's not a new damn handheld. These people support homebrew, that's why the company's got Holdings attached to its name. They don't want to screw you over here. They are merely adressing whines with things they probably didn't include in order to lower the price.

Anyway, as someone asked earlier, the draw of USB HD is only there because it plays video - a movie is an easy 600MB, something you won't fit on an SD card costing less than a quarter of what you paid for the unit. Sure, the movie can be made much, much smaller, but it'll take ten hours of converting on your compy at the least. USB HD makes it easy, breezy, dandy all round. If the thing has video support, not having USB Host for USB HDs seems a touch silly - after all, you won't want to fill up a large portion of a reasonably priced SD card for a single TV episode, now will you?

I'm not put off by this - in fact, I'm thinking of selling my current (shipping) unit and getting the next one when it comes. Or maybe not sell the old thing. The next model is a ways down the pipe, and with the money I won't be spending on commercial games or apps I don't think it'll be out of the question for me to save up enough for that by the time it comes around. Then again, I'm a kid in school.

just how do you know all of this informations? are you working for gph?
i've not seen any offical annoucement from GPH yet?

He's just speculating. Like everyone else. The very thing I was talking about.

Er, yes, it's speculation. I thought that was obvious. Then again, I think it's all grounded in *good sense* rather than AAARGH THEY NERFED THE GP2X GPH NO LUV US OMGZORX!!!!

I'm simply posting what makes sense. Naturally, if the GPH managers turn into nutters all predictions are out the window, but I fail to see why any of these extraneous upgrades would occur...

Didn't GP32 have minor upgrades like BLU and FLU? Expect F-200 like one of those. BTW this is not someone's wild dream because GPH's own homepage's Q&A section spilled the beans. According to the guy, they're considering all the customers' requests such as litium battery, harddrive, and such. Sounds like the update is still in drawing board with nothing concrete.

If and when they release rechargeable version of GP2x, I would still keep my F-100 since AA will outlast ANY rechargeable batteries.

The same Q&A guy said that they're in talk with MagicEye people to open up the information on the co-processor for the public so that we, homebrewers, can actually use that processor. Now, that's refreshing considering all the Sony's best efforts to put road blocks on homebrewers for PSP.
