I'm considering a GPX2. I'm a proud PSP owner, but I find the idea of homebrew and portable emulators exciting, however, I A) Upgrade my PSP's firmware, since I bought it for games, music, and movies, not emulators. However, it seems like GamePark Holdings seems to support the idea of having their handheld a home for amateur code wizards and hackers to try things with. Few things I need to know.

What are the main differences between the GP32 and GPX2?

Whats the cheapest I could get each?

If I'm just going for homebrew, should I go for GP32 instead?

Are there commercial games released for the GPX2?

Just how easy is it to run things like emulators and other homebrew programs on the GPX2, installation wise and such.

Just what exactly IS the GPX2, and what are it's regular functions?

How big are GPX2's homebrew files? Will I have to buy an SD card?

Are their rechargable batterys? I can't stand to go back to carrying batterys around.

What are the dementions of the screen?

And most importantly, is the GPX2's homebrew power worth a fifteen your old's money? Or should I just stick with my v2.60 PSP, seeing as my wallets already aiming for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Revoloution.

GP32 v GP2X
SMC v SD
1 x 133 cpu v 2 x 200 cpu
no OS v Linux

For GP32 check on eBay, I would say around £100 maybe with some extras
GP2X is £125 for the console

Both are for homebrew. You may want to check what is out for both at the moment and predict what may be coming soon.

Not yet.

Just marginally harder then the PSP

Just what exactly IS the GPX2, and what are it's regular functions?
Linux based handheld. Has mplayer, mp3, picture viewer and eBook reader by default of the firmware.

How big are GPX2's homebrew files? Will I have to buy an SD card?
Yes.

Are their rechargable batterys? I can't stand to go back to carrying batterys around.
Yes (rechargable AAs)

What are the dementions of the screen?
3.5 inch if I remember correctly

And most importantly, is the GPX2's homebrew power worth a fifteen your old's money? Or should I just stick with my v2.60 PSP, seeing as my wallets already aiming for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Revoloution.
Good question. Ask yourself that question since you are in the best position to answer it.

Emulators marginally harder than the PSP? I beg to differ. If you talking about Neogeo and PSX roms/isos maybe but regular roms? just as easy as the GP32 assuming the emulator supports your roms as is.

Withthe PSP you have to use those hacks and such to run home brew and that's assuming you have the right firmware...

1. Faster cpu. GP32 was 133mhz default, overclocking to about 166 on average. gp2x 2 cpus at 200mhz default up to about 280 overclocked
More RAM. Gp32 8mb. GP2x 64mb
More buttons: gp32 6 gp2x 11
Hardware scaling takes work from the main cpu and allows it to process other stuff
Tv-out
Card support: GP32 used smc (128mb max) Gp2x uses sd (max 2gb possibly 4gb)
Firmware: GP32 uses custom firmware GP2x runs linux which is easier to code for
Movie Player. Gp2x movie player kicks the crap out of gp32s gpcinema
Looks: The gp2x is a sexy black retro style. The gp32 is a bulging white console with boobs on the back

2. The gp32 isnt in production any more but I think craig is still selling them for about £90. But for that price you might as well pay the extra £35 and get a gp2x.

3. No commercial games yet.

4. Now that the gp2x is out more people will develop for it rather than the gp32. Theres already loads of homebrew on the gp2x and because its running linux therell be lots of ports and lots of sdl games.

5. Easy. Just download, copy onto the sd card and run from the menu. Some programs may require additional configuring but its still easy

6. Installed on the gp2x is a movie player, mp3/ogg player, picture viewer and ebook reader. Loads more homebrew apps are available for download

7. Yes you will have to buy an SD card to store everything on. The gp2x has 64mb internal storage for linux which at the moment isnt writable. But once you get a gp2x you'll realise you're definitely going to need a big sd card to store all your apps/games/roms/movies/music/pics/ebooks

8. The gp2x uses standard AA batteries. Rechargable AAs should keep you going from anywhere between 3-5.5 hours and probably more with future firmware upgrades.

9. 3.5" diagonally 320x240 pixels

10. The Dreamcast and GP homebrew scene have always been the strongest homebrew scenes. Other console tend to have quick ports and half finished games/emus. In the GPs community you find loads of devs/artists/designers etc. who are truly dedicated to their gp2x and release loads of truly greats projects. You wont find anything like it on the psp, especially with sonys constant attempts to squash homebrew

craigix said he would sell his last gp32's *with* extras for only 80 quid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

It having 2x200mhz cpu's doesnt mean that things are running at 400mhz right? Thats something I always wanted to know about. Like how it works and what benefit the gp2x can deliver with 2x200 vs something like a zodiac or psp?

Just curious/intrested if it can outperform either the zodiac or psp.

It's marginally weaker than the PSP and probably a bit weaker than a Zodiac 2 as well, but it runs Linux and is much more open, so chances are in the end it'll end up with better emulation than the PSP despite having a smaller scene. But for now I don't think it can really do much more than a hacked PSP.

EDIT: And no, 2x200 != 400 in this case. For some things it'll be worse, and for some it'll be better.

The effect of the second processor has been discussed several tiems already, and I believe Squidge has the most info written on it but from what I can tell in laymans terms.

the PSP processor is like a large strong guy running to a well and drawing water then running back to put out a fire. where as the GP2X's dual processor is like two guys, half the size working together to draw the water, and put out the fire. The problem is while this can easily be more efficient, the two men can also get in each other's way if they aren't coordinated well enough to avoid steping on each others feet thus making them slower than the big guy.

My understanding was that the PSP has two processors as well, at 333 MHZ each underclocked to 222 MHZ, I think.

I think he was comparing the use of emulators on the PSP; only the one CPU is being used ATM.

Although the same is true currently for the GP2X, but since GPH allows us to use this system openly, it's only a matter of time before a guru figures out how to use the 2nd CPU.

Ohhh, OK, well I agree then.
Can't beat having the hardware manufacturer trying to, you know, improve homebrew functionality with each firmware upgrade as opposed to stripping it away at all cost...

Thank you, thank you

Thats all I really wanted to know about the system thanks. I do like the fact it runs linux and is open source, but so far like you said its somewhat like a hacked psp at the moment which I have and gotten recently. Guess I'll wait untill more stuff is released for it. It would suck to shell out another 200 bucks on something I can do with my other $200 handheld. If the gp2x psx emu played Castlevania Symphony of the Night I would be getting a gp2x with the quickness. That or a nice M.A.M.E emulator that plays Neo Geo, Cps1, and Cps2 games, but for now I'll wait.

just so you know [ != ] |= [ |= ]

for all you nerds out there, press [SHIFT] \ to make the seperator mark you need.

GamerDude, I think you should know that the NeoGeo CD emulator is awesome already :D

Why would you use |= in that statement? != means "not equal". The only thing I can think that |= would mean is "or equal" which doesn't really make much sense.

Weaker than a zodiac 2? The zodiac has a single 193 MHz CPU 8 MB of heap RAM and a simple 2D GPU. How is 2 x 200 MHz cores plus a graphics co-processor weaker?
