Thanks to the work of some great developers here (notably ooPo for toolchain.pl and paeryn for a better SDL), I've been able to port DosBox to the GP2X. It still needs work, but does have a reasonable shot at running older DOS games at a playable level.

More information in DosBox for GP2X post on my blog.

woohoo! verry cool!!!
will try it asap!

cheers

Thanks for releasing this. Have just been playing Blockout. Should definitely have some fun with that one.

Will try some other games out soon.

You have to keep in mind that this isn't a PC, and that (as I understand it) Dosbox requires a fair bit of power to run at a decent speed. Later DOS games might be a bit much for the 2X. That's what we're all wondering, is which DOS games will be playable on the 2X.

Blockout huh? You do know that there is a good version of this game running full speed on the Lynx emu right?

Donation information?

Hey, I just ported it. You want to support DosBox, go to http://dosbox.sf.net and click on the "Support this Project" button on the bottom of the page. As for me, you can click on a Google ad on my blog if you like. <g>

UPDATE: See the <g>? That means I was joking -- please don't go clicking Google ads just to artificially bump my counts. My pals at Google don't like that.

I didn't know that. A good thing, too, as I might never have had the motivation to do the port.

That's okay, I'm sure we'll find some use for it.

How can i edit the mapping

Where can i find something about keymapping for this

Key mapping: The main hack I made to DosBox is to treat the 19 "buttons" of the GP2X (the 8 directions of the joystick are just buttons to the software) as if they were keystrokes. I arbitrarily picked letter keys A through S.

Look at this page: http://wiki.gp2x.org/wiki/SDL_Joystick_mapping

Note the "event button" numbers. 0=up, 1=upleft, 2=left, ..., 16=vol+, 17=vol-, 18=joyclick

Now add 97 to each of those to find out what keystroke it generates:

0=up becomes 97=key_a, 1=upleft becomes 98=key_b, etc.

Now, look at the 'mapper.txt' file that DosBox reads for keymappings. In the Blockout example one I included, you'll see that I changed the Up Arrow mapping like to:

key_up "key 97"

...which means to treak key 97 (the letter 'a', but actually the GP2X "up") as a PC-keyboard Cursor Up.

Clear as mud?

It's also on Megadrive (DrMD) and I believe Atari ST (OutcaST).

But I'm glad you weren't aware of that :D
