Hi,

I updated Albion to version 1.2.0

The big change is using WildMIDI library instead of SDL_mixer for playing MIDI files. It sounds better and can play more than one MIDI stream simultaneously.

Download it here:
Repo

Versions for other platforms and the source code are available on GitHub.

You can buy Albion on GOG.com.

Changes:
* MIDI playback using WildMIDI (old MIDI playback using SDL_mixer can be set in the configuration file)
* minor bug fixes

Forum topic for older releases is here.

Edit (06.11.2011):
Albion was updated to version 1.2.1 with the following changes:
* fix using WildMIDI when not using alternative SDL library (by notaz)
* show the Readme in the Documentation submenu

Edit (09.03.2014):
Albion was updated to version 1.3.0 with the following changes:
* removed SDL library by notaz from pnd (newer version is in the firmware)
* newer version of WildMIDI library
* MIDI playback using BASSMIDI (uses soundfonts for playing MIDI)
(can be set in the configuration file, default is WildMIDI)
* reworked xmi2midi conversion, fixing minor bugs in the process
* configuration editor (doesn't support changing button mappings)

Edit (30.07.2014):
Albion was updated to version 1.4.0 with the following changes:
* added enhanced 3D rendering - activated by default
(the 3d part of the game is rendered in the native resolution,
instead of rendered in the original resolution and then scaled)
(there are some minor issues, read the readme for more information)

Edit (14.08.2014):
Albion was updated to version 1.4.1 with the following changes:
* fix pressing Fn key when using alternative SDL library (by notaz)

Edit (24.12.2014):
Albion was updated to version 1.5.0 with the following changes:
* fix playback of background sound/music effects (played using music driver)
(it's MIDI, but not General MIDI)

Edit (03.01.2015):
Albion was updated to version 1.5.1 with the following changes:
* fix some of the minor issues with enhanced 3D rendering
(semitransparent messages, dialogs and menu shadows are no longer displayed with black background)

Edit (15.08.2015):
Albion was updated to version 1.5.4 with the following changes:
* fix bug in the original code

Edit (26.08.2015):
Albion was updated to version 1.5.5 with the following changes:
* limit the maximum number of sold items to 99
* fix bug in the original code

Edit (11.10.2016):
Albion was updated to version 1.6.0 with the following changes:
* rework keyboard input for ASCII characters
* add keyboard input for language specific characters
(works with English, French, German and Czech versions of Albion)
(letter composing works only with standard SDL and not alternative SDL by notaz)
* MIDI playback using ALSA sequencer
* minor bug fixes

Edit (1.1.2018):
Albion was updated to version 1.6.1 with the following changes:
* add new MIDI plugin: adlmidi - it plays MIDI music using OPL3 emulator
and also plays background sound/music effects
* fix for filesystems with 64-bit inodes
* modify ALSA midi plugin to select volume by changing volume of all channels instead of changing note velocity

Edit (10.12.2023):
Albion was updated to version 1.7.4 with the following changes:
* integrate video playing (intro and credits) into main executable
* add several options for making screenshots
* fix bugs in the original code
* fix Shift+Key ascii codes
* add support for inputing characters using Alt codes
* screen redraw 60 times per second
* use latest versions of libADLMIDI, WildMIDI, BASSMIDI libraries
* minor bug fixes

From readme:
Enhanced 3D rendering renders the 3d part of the game in the native resolution, instead of rendering it in the original resolution and then scaling it.

There are some minor issues:
- it works best when the 3D window size is set to 100%
- semitransparent messages, dialogs and menu shadows are displayed with black background
- when toggling scaling or enhanced 3D rendering and the game is in 3D mode and a message, dialog or popup menu is displayed, the 3D part may not be displayed correctly (until the message, dialog or popup menu is closed)

Enhanced 3D rendering can be turned off in the configuration file (or using the configurator).

I really should try this game, it looks and sounds interesting...and somehow the Story remembers me onto James' Camerons "Avatar" ;)

Whooooot :)

Thanks :)

I'm already hours into the game, better music sounds fantastic to me :)

Many thanks for the update. Albion seems like it'll be a great game for the Pandora, if only I can force myself to sit down and actually play it for more than five minutes.

Yeah... my biggest problem with the Pandora is is that I find it soooo hard to commit to one title. There's too much choice!

Oh, neat, thanks. I'm about half way through with the game, will see if this version improves something :)

You can use a soundfont with BASSMIDI to play music and it should play nicer with TV out (because it uses the SDL in firmware), but other than that you probably won't notice anything different.

BTW are you still playing the same game ? I think you started playing it 3 years ago.

Yes, I am... I only find rarely time to continue playing :\

I'm aware of the project. But as with similar projects, the question is when and if the project will be finished. Also the project has high requirements (the GLES version requires OpenGL ES 3.0) so it's questionable whether it would run on Pandora.

And while Albion is great, I always find myself playing Ambermoon instead :)

Don't get me wrong: thanks for the port!

For some reason when I try to save a game, I can't enter a name for the save. I tried the physical keyboard and the virtual keyboard, but nothing happens.

Does anyone have any similar problems or ideas?

Are you using the latest firmware (1.60) ?

What about when talking with someone ? There's an option where you can write what you want to talk about. Does the keyboard  work there ?

Yes, latest firmware.

I've noticed that when I first start the game by clicking continue, if I then immediately go into the save game dialogue I can type, but if I do so later after playing a while I can't.

Very strange, but at least the continue option works.

Love your Albion port very much. Very thoughtfull and intuitive controls.
Made a Hd file for Ambermoon and it works perfect on my Pandora with a usb mouse. In my opinion those Thalion games are the best Rpgs ever made.
