So I heard the Pandora does Full speed C64 emulation but I thought so did the Wiz, the GP2X and the Dingoo. Neither of the last 3 mentioned consoles can handle modern C64 demo's like this one http://noname.c64.or...ad.php?id=91085 which can be found here http://noname.c64.or...lease/?id=72550
When loading this demo up the framerate drops to about 1fps :(
Also when seeing bubble bobble on EvilDragon's Gamma movie I thought I noticed the dragon not moving around smoothly...

I would really like to know if the pandora is fast enough to handle this kind of stuff. Maybe a youtube movie is a bit too much to ask but if a dev can try it out and tell me if it works or not?

pandora screen and C64 game = 50 Hz, camera and vid = 30 Hz.

There was a C64 video at the end of last year, if that helps to shed any light. It shows some games, but no demos, though. :p

Games tend to ask a lot less of the emu than modern demo's which really push the hardware to their limits

The possibility of just that is why I love the machine :) The people who built the C64 could never have dreamed that the machine would be able to do what it does now ;)

theoretically it is easily capable of runing c64 emulation at full speed. What i would say however is that people writing demos now (some 25 years after the machines release) will know every hardware trick there is to know and these may not be handled well or efficiently in an emulator due to these tricks lack of general use or knowledge to the emulator writer.
Certainly from what i hear of other more complex emulators such as SNES this may certainly be the case, so i assume it to be similar for the C64.

[edit] can i also add that i find your avatar... distateful (whatever it is meant to signify or not)

That would be true if Vice on my PC wouldn't be able to handle it either but it does

I guess Vice on the Wiz and Vice on PC come from the same source code?

Edit: Sorry, you mentioned 'efficiently' that coult be the case ofcourse

i will be pedantic and say they are likely to come from the same source code but are the versions the same?
then of course there is always the fall back about processors handling different types of operation differently or PC code being able to use operations specific to intel/amd chips that arent necesarily present in the chips sported by the wiz etc.

of course this could all be cobblers, i'd be tempted to speak to whoever ported vice, whose name doesnt come to hand at the moment.

After looking at a video of Edge of Disgrace, I am officially impressed! Now where did I put my old C64?

This is silly ,it's not about the hardware ,it's the ported emulator that is the issue when running demos ,like the nes emulator on psp ,theres nes10,nester,and pnes - some run more games than others and some hack games don't run properly due to patches. If i am wrong in the case with vice64 emu then it is becase vice can run these demos on pc
hardware without frame rate issues, then it could be speed but also the way it has been ported.

Heh

There's a lot more where that came from. The C64 scene is still quite lively atm and there's demo's, music, gfx and games coming out all the time. Just keep an eye on the CSDB

Also check out BluReu by Crest and be impressed some more http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdUzJL5XqBQhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-qEzv_IxuU

PS. Still would like to see some high-end C64 demo's being run on the Pandora

Edit: Found a better vid

c64 emulation is very important to me - it (Vice) is still my most used emulator on my PC.

The current version of Vice is 2.2 (12/2009). I've no idea what version of Vice we are using on Pandora though? Anyone know?

:)

how well do those modern demos work on real C64s, or do they onyl work on over-fast emu's?

someone will have to try it on vice and see, I suppose; vice runs pretty damned good, is all I know :)

Damn you. I've just spent half an hour watching the latest C64 demos.

Those demo's are usually released on demo compo's/C64 party's and have to run on a real unmodified C64, fit on a 5 1/4"floppy disc etc.
Having that said, the demo's usually run way better on the real thing than on an emu anyway.

The only non original C64 demo's I know are those made for the C64 DTV which is actually an FPGA with a modified C64 core on it to gain more colors etc.

Vice is a very good emulator and the only one I know that emulates the C64 hardware better but is more demanding on the hardware running it is Hoxs64.
If something works on a real C64 and not on Vice, try Hoxs64 http://www.hoxs64.net/Default.aspx
