Idea - Pandora games showcase

@pmprog, Yeah the list is sortable by A --> Z, but as default when page loads initially it will show whichever is the top in the HTML, which I will be adding the newest ones to.

So as I add new games, they will be shown at the top, unless you sort the order.

I'll have to take a look at the issue in FF, I don't actually have it installed here right now but will install it later tonight probably to see this, then correct it [hopefully] :)

Cheers

@sebt3, I've LOADS of gems missing I'm sure, just scratched the surface of the ones listed under 'Action Games' on the Repo ... Will add some general info about the Pandora and contact info, then will be continuing to add games to the list... including those ones you mention eventually. Figure is easiest to add them whilst going down the list as they are in Repo else will have to check if a particular game is added already :)

This is starting to look really nice! Congratulations and thanks!

Are you planning to put all games on the repo on that website? I wouldn't do that, not all of them are sufficiently finished / polished / interesting to be part of a showcase.

One more property you should definitely include: C4A support or not. I guess it could be part of the genre.

Would it be possible to focus a bit more on Pandora exclusive games? (and I guess we could call games that were originally released for GP2X also as being Pandora exclusive)

http://repo.openpandora.org/?page=detail&app=rescue-17448

http://repo.openpandora.org/?page=detail&app=cromozome

Also these FOSS games should really be in the showcase imo:

http://repo.openpandora.org/?page=detail&app=frozen-bubble-2.2.x

http://repo.openpandora.org/?page=detail&app=frogatto

The above are all just suggestions of course - feel free to do whatever you want with that :)

@_wb_, thanks. I guess I'll not include all the games then, though I'm only reliant on the comments against games on the repo as to whether they're complete or not ... or if they are C4A compatible or even Pandora/GP2X exculsive.

Hopefully people can point out to me if I add a game listing which I've not stated as an exclusive when it is... I can then add it to that genre.

I will add the C4A as a genre, probably include a little icon of some sort alongside those titles and the genre name too, like I done with the 'exclusive' games already.

I could use, like the red-ball-joystick icon used in the repo for it, unless Skeezix has another one he'd prefer was used?

I will add those FOSS and Pandora exclusive games that you've listed, cheers, I agree it is a good thing to focus on here.

Have you any thoughts on how I could focus on those a bit more? Perhaps have those ones with different colour link buttons - like Green instead of Orange - so they stand out and catch the eye a bit more within the list/grid views?

Website looks good so far, but somehow I find it hard for anyone to be convinced by seeing these games running on Pandora, and the price they have to pay for it.

It's a tough challenge to sell the Pandora as a game machine only. Again, the value of the Pandora comes from the fact you can do anything with it and not just gaming. Nobody is going to buy a 1Ghz at the current price just to play games (well, some will but it's going to be very limited).

So, I'm not sure how helpful in the end it is to make a website focusing only on the games.

@ekianjo,  I'm just taking the screenshots which are up on the repo - I don't even have a Pandora to take my own screenshots yet :)

I'll check that page on repo again soon though to see if any other screens for it look to be from the Pandora.

As I've already mentioned, I'm not doing this primarily to sell units ... that is yours and ED's job :)

I'm doing this for 'us', as a community, simply to give a more 'visual' overview of the games available for 'us' to play [Ok... not me as don't have my Pandora 'yet' but you know what I mean]

I just thought the repo was a bit long to simply see the games, in terms of screenshots, you have to link jump back and forth into each games page. This sites gives just a more visual overview.

Personally, I like to view screenshots when looking for games, it's what I do in the high road shops too like HMV or GAME, I go in and pick up game boxes and flip them over to peruse the screenshots.

That's all it is.

Might not be very helpful to some people, but others might like to just peruse the site, see a screenie the like the look of and then go to the repo to d/l it ... that's what I was thinking

I've set up the Google Analytics thing, if it gets zero hits I'll just switch it off eh, no harm done

Edit: Have removed the entry for Duke Nukem, it was the only screenshot on the repo for it though, so if anyone has another I can use please let me know :)

@sebt3, I have been, well since we were over at gp32x boards anyway ... I will be joining ranks though around Christmas time, when I shall make use of ED's generous offer to upgrade my order with Craig to the 1GHz model.

I could afford the upgrade now to the standard model but I want the 1GHz as would like to make use of some of the Android stuff.

...Not long to go now :)

@Klumpen, This is true ... Would be busy playing all those games. Just was thinking that I'd like to play Frogatto, not played that before and looks decent. Will wait to play it on Pandora though

Frogatto ist excellent, not only decent.

Pandoras screen and controls seem to be made for it too.

Nice, I do enjoy a decent platform game and it looks great just from those screenshots, definitely will be one for me. I imagine I will be trying out lots of new games when the time comes

Again, very nice work, FZERO! This is starting to look really nice.

Some more comments:

I have added links to videos in the "additional information" on the repo for my games (NubNub and Microbes). Could you also change the author of NubNub to "_wb_" (it is updated on the repo but not yet on your website)?

The screenshot for AquaVenture is not right.

Maybe you could also add links to the C4A score page? That would be quite practical. E.g. for NubNub it is http://c4a.openpandora.org/#/nubnub

Perhaps a link to the forum thread about the game (if there is one) would also be practical.

An indication of "commercial" vs "free" would perhaps also make sense. Maybe "data needed" should be changed into "purchase needed" - which can mean either you have to pay for the PND, or the PND is free but it needs data from a purchased copy of the game. You could add the price for those that are for sale on the repo.

It would be really cool if you could somehow make it open the video on the page itself instead of in an external window. Especially in the grid view that would be cool: imagine the screenshot magically being replaced by a video...

Edit: many of the non-commercial games on the repo are FOSS. E.g. my games are. You can check the license field on the repo by clicking on "Package Contents" - if it says "GPL" or similar, or has a link to the source code, you can mark them as FOSS too. Maybe this belongs not in the genre column, but in the "Data/purchase needed" column. You could put "FOSS" in that column, or "Gratis" (if it's free as in beer but no source / permission to change it), or "Commercial", or "FOSS engine, Commercial data". Or something like that.

There's also a minor bug when you select field filter: it seems to grep the entire row, not just the column you're interested in. E.g. when you select "Genre: strategy" it will also give you results that do not have that genre, but that do have "strategy" in its skills column. Not sure if that is a bug or a feature, but it's not the behavior I expected.

I'll make those changes shortly, thanks for pointing them out.

I also agree that links to the C4A page and Forum thread page would also be good, I'll look at adding those for all games and just grey out those that don't have them [yet].

Will change 'data needed' to 'purchase needed', agree that's probably a better/more relevant thing for people.

I should be able to add the video's on the page easy enough, with a lightbox pop up that embeds the video.

Probably be like that though, rather than positioned exactly where the static screenshot it - Not sure I could achieve that.

Will look into that later tonight when have time :)

EDIT:

Have added additional links for C4A and Forum threads.

Added YT vids to show on page embed autoplay.

Added a little zoomy-zoom effect on the thumbs, just to wake the page up a bit :)

Is there an easy way to identify if a game is commercial/non-commercial?
