bluetooth headsets don't work properly, and require user-intervention to partly-work.

At best, only some applications work, and what does work is still semi-broken.

From what I can tell, alsa needs to be updated:

http://alsa.opensrc.org/Asoundrc

Neither .asoundrc or /etc/asound.conf is normally required. You should be able to play and record sound without either.
Update alsa.

Or I will pet a kitten every hour until you do.

They have that written since 2007, alsa version we use is 1.0.20 from 2009, there is no indication that would fix anything. How would it know when you want to play from BT and when from speakers anyway?

I can't even record anything on my desktop machine without a self-written .asounrc despite up-to-date ALSA: ALSA only provides chip-specific configuration scripts, my audio chip has 12 internal input channels and every manufacturer chooses different channels for their input jacks. Also, I have found 2 really dealbreaking bugs while trying to get some advanced configuration to work - but ALSA's bugtracker has been down for ages... (screw Firefox for using float samples on x86!)

Don't expect it to fix random problems just by being newer.

Bluetooth was a danish viking king, who introduced christianity to fight the norse rule.

Ruin something that works well and introduce something thats broken by design, sounds familiar?
