We've started to order things!

How long will it take to have
[doublepost=1487292791,1487291656][/doublepost]@EvilDragon:
1. Why didn't you order the CPU-Boards one Month ago? You wrote "that new layout - which should definitely be the final one!" and than decided to not have another prototype run. So, why???
2. Where are the cases? 18 days ago you wrote: "I should receive more cases soon" Where are they? Or didn't you even ask?
3. One month ago you wrote: "So, CPU Board should be fixed now. Motherboard and Display board are done as well." And now you are working on the Wifi? Isn't the Wifi part of the Motherboard?
4. One month ago you wrote: "Keymat is finished, just the DPad needs a tiny fix." and now: "We need to use a different color for the keymat" "Another way to improve this is by using a different material" How long will that take?

Ed proceeds cautiously and tends to all the little details. The objective is to have the pyra be as god as possible for all of us. I'm eager too but I suppose I am used to waiting from my experiences in the pandora era. Its quite a technical juggle to make a device of this complexity and with a small team. Granted time estimates have been revised over time but i belive the Pyra never truly had a firm release date - just hopeful dates. Trust that it will be worth the wait.

What do you plan to use the pyra for? I guess I'll emulate and play games, surf the net and take notes. much around with apps and play shmups on the go.

And Dark red cases, i want.

He (m@t) is really a drolly kind of fellow, isn't he ? Always asking and moaning the same, while everybody here in the forum tried to explain him, that
  • There was never given a de facto release date for distributing the Pyra.
  • That ED always stated, he tries to deliver a maximum possible functional Pyra.
  • That it's in our all interest to clear out problems before delivering Pyras as far as possible even if this results in a further delay.
  • That this project is a community driven project and not comparable with projects driven by multi million/billion dollar companies.
  • And last but not least: We all trust in ED because of his sublime and outstanding handling of the Pandora project.
Go on ED and make our dreams of a wonderful and unrivaled Linux handheld device possible.

yelling at ED won't make it go faster. especially if you want him to answer all your questions...

A finished layout doesn't mean you can immediately order it.
You need to recheck the changes, make sure nothing else broke in the process and you also need to export everything to Gerber data, update the BoM and check once again that all data you submit to the manufacturer are fine.

Otherwise, it could easily happen you end up with 600 non-working but non-fixable PCBs (it's a 12 layer board!) which would delay things at least another 7 - 8 weeks and cause a damage of 10k EUR.
That's definitely not worth the risk.

Besides, mostly all companies in China had closed due to the chinese new year, so you couldn't even submit them the details before.

2. Where are the cases? 18 days ago you wrote: "I should receive more cases soon" Where are they? Or didn't you even ask?

See point 5 in the newspost. They're not yet here.
And no, I didn't ask while I was having the flu, I didn't do much at all during that time except for the most necessary things and trying to recover.
I'm slowly catching up with everything now and will chase that issue down as well now.

However, as mentioned, it wasn't the top priority. The top priority were definitely the CPU Boards, as these take longest to produce.
You can easily produce over 1000 cases in one week once the moulds are finished.

3. One month ago you wrote: "So, CPU Board should be fixed now. Motherboard and Display board are done as well." And now you are working on the Wifi? Isn't the Wifi part of the Motherboard?

Yes, but Wifi reception can be improved using the proper resistors and coils.
It wasn't a planned change of the PCB itself, just finding out the proper resistor values by measuring multiple things.

As it turned out, Juliano can simulate that as well, so our initial plan of just using different resistors was expanded to also do small layout changes to improve Wifi even further.
The Mainboard takes less time to produce than the CPU board, so if we'd order it in two weeks, it'll still arrive shortly before the CPU Boards are here.

4. One month ago you wrote: "Keymat is finished, just the DPad needs a tiny fix." and now: "We need to use a different color for the keymat" "Another way to improve this is by using a different material" How long will that take?

As you read correctly, the DPad needed a tiny fix, so I couldn't test it properly.
Now I worked on the DPad so I could test it. It felt a bit mushy and not as good as it should (even though the keys and buttons are fine). So we tried to find out the reason and could pinpoint it to the type of color used (a different color had been used on an earlier version of the keymat and that seemed to be better).
And the material can improve things as well.

Testing different materials and colors won't take long. Changing moulds would take long, but these are fine.

In general, there is absolutely NO reason to rush things.
After coming this far, it would be totally crazy to risk money and put the full project at stake just because it could mean that we deliver 2 - 4 weeks earlier.

I'm not insane.

Hey m@t, if you have time to complain continously, then you have time to donate a couple million $ so ED can complete it faster.
There are way too many things to take into account when developing a product such as this. If you can't truly understand that BEFORE making futile attempts at "constructive criticism", then you're being nothing but a bother.
Sorry if this sounds mean, but seeing your comments derail these update threads is starting to get legitimately tiring.
I don't have ED's patience. Like, at all.

EDIT: BTW ED, very stupid question: are the mobile components and sensors on the CPU board or the main board? I don't EXACTLY have a use for them yet, but if they're on the main board I don't want to end up being locked out on being able to use them if I need them later. Meaning I'll order a mobile edition when it's time for me to order one (when Link has them) if they're on the main board or a standard version if it's on the CPU board.

Regarding 4G and wifi, for some reason I thought for a moment that they used the same antenna module thingy. I still don't think any of us want a repeat of the Pandora wifi, least of all ED, and it would be nice if the 4G worked great.
I think they do. But mutiplexing different frequencies onto a single antenna is radioelectronics 101, but for our purposes the two waves (be they waves or particles, but that's a whole other matter - for us they're just waves) can be considered independently as soon as they leave the metal.

I guess the length is probably the length of a 700MHz radio wavelength, so at 1.4GHz it's running as a half-wave dipole, and at 2.8GHz (close enough to 2.6GHz for wifi) it's a quarter-wave dipole, and at 5.4GHz it'd be an eighth wave. You can run any and all of those frequencies without too much power, because the metal electrically likes to resonate at those frequencies.

P.S.: My dream for this project is to be able to run Octave with charts and graphs to be able to learn math like machine learning and statistics on the go. Does anyone know if it will be even remotely possible?
Well, octave 3.8 is available for all arm platforms in Jessie, while 4.0.2 is there in Stretch and Sid. 4.0.2 is the cutting edge release less one, according to the project page, so should be fairly up-to-date. I've not tested any of it, but it ought to work I'd have thought.

Pink with gold sparkles hasn't been suggested yet, has it?

EDIT: And to increase offtopicness, try Firefox plugin "Dark Background and Light Text"

V4.5 got different SD slots and the eSATA connector was replaced by an USB3 socket
V5.1 tested a new µUSB3 connector and again a different SD slot
What's the reason for this SD slot back and forth?

@m@t : I know it seems like a long time, looking at the project from the outside... but once you get sucked in, your perspective will change and you will realize that amazingly the Pyra has been approaching completion in just Two Months, since Two Months became the event horizon.

So sit back, relax... you will have your Pyra in no time at all - Two Months from now.

It's incredible to look back and see how much has happed since this all started... Two Months ago...

Hi all,

Is there any chance to replace the USB 3 connector with a USB Type-C connector ?

I have several external hard drives that have this type of connector and it is very fiddly on all of them. It seems to wear out very easily and then its becomes fiddly to get a good contact.
USB type-C seems to address this issue.

Type-C requires a lot more than just exchanging the socket, because it introduced a lot of new features. The new alternate modes and the fact that it can be used upside down require a more complex wiring and you'll likely won't get around adding another IC, there's just no room to do that. There's a reason why one of the ICs near the backside uses a weird angle on the PCB (aka "wonky chip").

Brilliant. Thank you. There are no dramatic differences between 3.8 and 4 afaik.

and the sound chip.
Mainboard has WiFi, 4G, antennas, charger, sensors, nubs, keyboard, buttons, rumble motor, LEDs, SD slots, volume wheel, connection to speakers and battery, external connectors.
No headphone amp then? This sucks.
