running linux arm executables on Pandora

Some non-G&W LCD games can be quite enjoyable. The best one I ever played was a game called Bomb Finder. It's a top down game where you need to push walls in order to make a path through a maze to the bomb. While rushing against a time limit (It is a time bomb you see!)

If you don't plan carefully, it is very easy to push a wall which will end up blocking you from ever reaching the bomb. Successfully reaching the bomb means that you will automatically defuse it and you will then go onto the next level which has a different maze. After clearing all the different maze configurations (there was at least 20. Maybe as high as 30?!) it will start you at level 1 with, IIRC, an even tighter time limit. And so on ad infinitum.

It was quite challenging (because even if you solved a level in a previous run, you only needed to make one mistake - while under pressure - to cause your current run to come to a sudden end) until I had the idea of mapping out each maze that I reached on paper (letting the bomb go off which I sketched the pattern) then I could chart the optimal path at my leisure. After eventually finishing this "cheat sheet", it was simply a matter of consulting the map for each level I reached!
Bomb Finder seem hard to locate any gameplay vidoes of, but I found a few pictures at handheldmuseum.com. But the gameplay you describe sounds a bit similar to the G&W game Bomb Sweeper. I never played it myself though.

I did send you a message PM on this matter a while back. I wonder if you got the time to look at it (suggestion for making a box86 pnd)?
I already did a few PND based on box86. Not a stand alone launcher, but games packaged with box86 like Donkey Kong (I did quite a few, really, like Descent 3, FTL, Undertale, Neko Puzzle, Deltarune...). I don't think at this point a "stand alone" pnd would change much inside Pandora community.

You can search "box86" on repo, with a few hit already (and not all the pnd from me).

I see, I will update the XML's for my releases then. It looks like the search only finds what is inside the description, not information written in addidional info.

I have updated DonkeyKong at the repo. I have resized it to 800x480 to avoid cpu usage for scaling, so now it is fullscreen by default.
Also uploaded my two other LCD remakes, FireAttack and Runaway. Bolh converted to 800x480.

I played your donkey Kong game, it's great! It took me right back to the 80's :)
Looking fwd to playing your other "ports"

I don't recall Donkey Kong Jr G&W relying on catching or avoiding falling objects too much, though it's always possible I'm forgetting it as I haven't played it in 20 years or so.
You are correct @levi. I included this as the runner up in my earlier post (re best G&W gameplay) - or rather, to be precise, I meant to. My brain skipped a beat and I had typed Donkey Kong II instead of Donkey Kong Jr! o_O (Nothing wrong with II though. Both are good games.)

I don't have the original G&W of DK Jr but I do have it an official keychain replica. DK Jr is also simulated in 2 or 3 of the Game & Watch Gallery games on GBC & GBA IIRC.

I went through my collection of handheld electronic games and found it.

My memory was at fault. It wasn't called "Bomb Finder". It's called "BOOM! FINDER".

BOOM! FINDER
DOUBLE SCREEN HANDHELD GAME
  • MELODY SOUND EFFECTS
  • LARGE LCD
  • 2 GAME LEVELS WITH 24 RANDOM PATTERNS
  • REAL TIME CLOCK WITH DAILY ALARM
WG - 30
Made in China

"RANDOM" = I take this to mean the order that the patterns are used is random. The maze patterns themselves were preset.

After watching the video, I suspect that what I have is a cheap knock-off of "Bomb Sweeper". While the top screen is different (mine shows a panicking detective outside a bank) - the bottom screen has 6 walls by 4 walls which is exactly the same number of walls as Bomb Sweeper.
(Nice bit of detective work on your part BTW! ;) )

And here I was thinking that this was a non-G&W title with good gameplay and it was only a renamed clone of a G&W title!

In that case, I vote "Dinosaur Attack" as one of the best non-G&W LCD games I've played.
It was one of the few LCD games that I know where you weren't limited to a single screen gameplay. I don't mean double screened games. I mean that the game world was larger than the screen display. (e.g. in the case of a topdown game like Dinosaur Attack - you could move right from a cross shaped intersection and come out on the left of a T shaped intersection. Sounds basic stuff now but it was incredible at the time. When you consider that at least 95% LCD games consisted of running back and forth along a single screen trying to catch (or avoid) falling objects!)
(They weren't random screens BTW, you could actually map out the entire game world for each level. The level sizes were 4x4 or possibly even 5x5 game screens large IIRC)

The other notable exceptions to single screen gameplay is Bandai's incredible "double panel" line of LCD games. These had two LCDs layered over each other so that you could have a second location after beating the goal for the first screen. Hmm that doesn't make sense now that I read it.
I only ever got to experience Terror House - the first screen layer is a haunted graveyard? front lawn? which you have to traverse in order to reach the haunted mansion in the background. After reaching it, the game changes to the second layer. You are now inside the mansion and need to make your way to the bottom of the screen and stake the vampire in the coffin.
Incidentally, if anybody is curious to experience this gameplay, I do know that there is a fan out there who has tried to simulate most of the Bandai double panel games - including Terror House. They were (and probably still are) out on the internet somewhere if anybody wants to play a mostly accurate sim of these.

Slightly off topic - Does anybody here recall the once ubiquitous Brick Games? You never seem to see or hear of them these days. They just vanished as though they never existed. Back in the 90s these were the must have toy for any kid who couldn't afford or whose parents wouldn't let them have a Nintendo GameBoy. They were non-branded products that make remarkable claims ("9999 games in 1" was a common one) and actually consisted of about 10 to 20 basic game types that were presented by means of very chunky LCD blocks. They would include gameplay clones of Tetris, Breakout, Snake etc. They were so cheap that almost any kid could afford one.
Update: I see that some people are trying to simulate these on GitHub. example: https://github.com/vitalibo/Brick-Game-9999-in-1 )

@amyren - Thanks!

The new version of Donkey Kong doesn't work on my Pandora BTW. When I try to run it, nothing happens. o_O Not sure why this is happening. (The old fullscreen upload works but not the new one)

The other two remakes are working perfectly.
  • Fire Attack is better than I was expecting (Prior to your upload I was thinking of G&W title "Fire" for some reason  This is Fire Attack not Fire. Much better game.) I had Game & Watch Gallery 4 (GBA) and this was included in it.
  • Runaway is a welcome change from the "run back & forward to catch/dodge/hit falling/moving objects" gameplay. It's a fun little game. :)

It should run on 1Ghz pandoras, because that is what I have been testing it on.
Try to remove the old donkeykong files from your pandora before installing 1.79.
Then reboot after reinstalling

Thanks @amyren - I had already removed the old DK PND from my Pandora and rebooted. My Pandora is a 1Ghz rebirth.

Only possibility I can think of is maybe my download was corrupted somehow? I will download a fresh copy and retry.

If nothing else helps, you could try extracting the PND to a folder on your Sdcard. Then use the terminal and cd into that folder, and then run the command:
./runscript.sh
It should run then. But if it does not, at least you get some output in the terminal that might give you a clue.

Thanks @amyren - I extracted the PND and ran the sh. It worked fine! So then I tried the PND and that worked as well! No idea what happened there. Just glad it is now working. Thanks for your help! :)
