plus most traditional TV only has 640X480 res.

Standard NTSC had 255 lines of resolution. Some got cut off, so that's why classic consoles usually output between 200 and 240 lines of resolution, usually 224.

You could do 640x480, but only by interlacing the lines. Which is why using VGA tv-out from a PC on an old TV flickers like mad.

Surely you meant 525 lines for NTSC?

PAL has 625 lines and as such could do 800x600 without too much hassle (I think the Dreamcast PAL Dreamkey disc had a 800x600 option). My PC video out can display 1024x768, doesn't look too bad on a PAL display (just thos esmall fonts can get illegible). NTSC I wouldn't know about (must put my TV in NTSC mode and try it though).

Err... lets get back on topic shall we....

Jr2swiss says they are using S-video. Well I hope I can plug in a S-VHS - VHS (RCA) converter cable like I do with my PC's video out card and display it normally. Otherwise I'm knackered.

NTSC has slightly less vertical res (I think about 50 lines less) but a slightly higher refresh rate so it doesn't flicker as bad as PAL (60 Hz vs 50 Hz in 320 x 240 mode).
