I think in Europe billion is 10^12.

o_O

The "American" system is:
10^06 = million
10^09 = billion
10^12 = trillion
...

The "European" system
is:
10^06 = million
10^09 = thousand million
10^12 = billion
10^15 = thousand billion
10^18 = trillion
10^21 = thousand trillion
I didn't know this "European" system was still used today. I believe that england has switched over to the non-latin based system. I could be wrong.UK uses billion = 10^9 in normal usage, so I guess we are in line with the 'American' system.

Yeah, it's like million, 10 mio, 100 mio, billion

it's really retarded that there are differences

In Germany we have

Millionen (Million)
10 Millionen
100 Millionen
Milliarden (Billion)
10 Milliarden
100 Milliarden
Billionen (Trillion)
10 Billionen
100 Billionen
Trilliaden ...

so from Milliarden/Billion on, there is a gap of ^3. That's the way almost all roman languages handle this, nothing with 1000 billion and such. America and UK are pretty alone with not using the Milliard. Really strange and confusing all the time. UK adopted the american system some time ago, but there are always voices wanting the milliard back.
It's not like I want a change, it would be more confusing then anything else.
