Neo Geo Aes. Working Set

Most old games I got working by trying a different romset. The romset I have is old, and I don't know what it is. It's not Mame. Probably FBA.
AOF3, GAROUP, LASTBLD2, MSLUG3N, PREISLE2, SAMSHO5, SVCPLUS, KOF98N, KOF99, KOF200N, KOF2003, S1945P, and anything else I forgot that had encrypted roms was fixed by replacing the graphics roms. I would load the game in kawaks with the "save decrypted roms" setting on, and anything the emulator outputted was renamed to match the gngeo roms and copied over within that rom. Or sometimes the emulator didn't output anything, so i would just take the files from the working rom and insert them into the gngeo rom.

Awesome, Thanks for the info. I've got four different full sets at home so hopefully I will be able to contribute some fixes now that we have identified the problem few. You have done an amazing job already fantoboy I doubt there will be many for the rest of us to try and fix in the end ;)

I've got to work late tonight so will not be able to do any updates until tomorrow. Hopefully you, dustybin and anyone else who fancies it will be able to make even more progress.

All the best

FYI- most of the roms I used to repair roms and pull decrypted roms out of were mame roms

i got a lot of the roms that were missing grafics to work buy to work by renaming the files in the zip to those in the romrc.d file. for example sometimes a data file would end in .rom instead of .bin or vice versa in the romrc.d. if i find a rom with the same name as the romrc.d and all the data is there but with different names i just rename them exactly as the romrc names them. this may includes sometimes also changing a "-" into a "_" or vice vera.

on an unrelated not i have a slight request i want to mention if anyone can do it. the caanoo R and L buttons are key combinations that are easy to press manually. can the be changes to a+d and b+c combination's instead as those are impossible with one finger.

Any of those roms needed on my list? I could use some help. I dunno about changing the button config. I'm gonna root through the files sometime in the future to see if I can change the game names, so I'll keep my eyes open for any configs that let you change stuff like that

edit: svcplus is supposed to have all bosses unlocked, yet mine doesn't. gonna have to look into that....
maybe i grabbed files from the wrong rom and put them in there?

So I tried editing the Romrc files. I got a couple games to get past the loadIng screen, but they are just black once loaded. Getting the rom names to match is easy, but I don't know what to do with the number values. Anybody have any input?

edit:
this looks like it should help
http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showtopic=30968

still having difficulty though...

edit: got some more games working

I noticed that some games that seemed to not work did work after switching to the universal bios- but didn't have sound. Maybe they are just built incorrectly?

I honestly don't remember. But I pretty much went through the same process for each rom. I would test all the roms I had first (different rom sets). A lot worked straight from the beginning (I think Burning Fight was one). Then I would load the rom in question in Winkawaks. If it saved decrypted files, I would replace the ones in the zip with those. Then I check the romrc file to make sure the names in the archive match. If not, I would rename them. That process would fix most. I know Sengoku 3 needed decrypted roms. For the remaining ones, a lot of games don't have a corresponding romrc file. So they will not work no matter what! You have to create a romrc file for that game using the directions I just posted. I fixed a lot of games doing that. I'm getting clueless on the remaining ones. I think it's gonna be a matter of just finding a good rom and making sure the hexadecimal values in the romrc file are correct (which I'm a little shaky on).

these are my romrc files. So every file in my archives matches the names that you see here. Some may have been different are simply renamed to match these files.

I have exactly the same Burning Fight (set 1) rc file and the file names in the ROM zip are correct.

Here's the ROM file list from 7-Zip with CRCs:

burningfcrc.png

What are your CRCs ?

PS: I can start the game, but after the character selection I get a black screen.

Sounds to me like your graphics are encrypted. Try running them in winkawaks. Have the setting set to save decrypted roms. Take those roms that are outputted into the main winkawaks folder and rename them to what is in your zip file and then replace those files. That should do it.

Sengoku 3 is now working, I use the decrypted files (c1-c4,s1) from WinKawaks. Thanks for the hint.

Burning Fight is not encrypted, WinKawaks does not create any files. I think it's just not working. Are you able to pass the character select screen ? Can you please post your CRCs ?

Riding Hero has the same problem on WinKawaks, missing raster grafx. Turning on raster grafx in GnGeo displays the ground, but it flickers like hell. I think it's just not working as well. Is the ground displayed correctly with your ROM ?

Thanks

oops- looks like I have the same issues as you! I hadn't fully tested the games I thought I got working.

OK, I think I found the problem with the Wiz ROM pack files:

The Wiz has only 64MB RAM. Therefore, ROMs bigger than 64MB need a .gfx file in order to run. This file is automatically generated when running the game the first time. The Wiz ROM pack already contains these .gfx files and the bytes in the original files in the ROM .zip are replaced with binary zeroes (I guess to save space in the .zip file) !!!!! Therefore, the zipped ROM files can only be used together with the corresponding .gfx file.

The Caanoo has 128MB RAM and does not need (and use) the .gfx files. If the Wiz ROM pack is just copied to the Caanoo, all games bigger than 64MB will not run, because some files just contain zeroes and the .gfx file is not used.

How to resolve this problem:

For unencrypted games, the files containing just zeroes can copied from WinKawaks 1.61 ROMs (or can be probably used straight away). For encrypted games, the files containing just zeroes need to be decrypted first with WinKawaks (Tools -> Enable save decrypted Cs after loading, the files can be found in the WinKawaks root directory after the game has been loaded).

I haven't tried, but I guess all ROMs can just be used straight away from the WinKawaks 1.61 ROM set, except the encrypted games have to be decrypted first.

Hope this helps

Look for a gngeo 0.7 rom pack for the wiz -_-

Back in the GP2X days someone called antidark released a neogeo set for the GP2X which worked with GP2X gngeo. Is this gngeo 0.7 pack that antidark set?

But I described the winkawaks procedure already. Does this fix anything that I haven't fixed already? I think the only one this might fix is the second Last Blade set and maybe the other Garou set. I've been having difficulty getting the other games to work. I think I might just not have the correct corresponding roms to decrypt.

The WinKawaks procedure is only necessary for encrypted games. All games with .gfx files will not work on Caanoo, since the ROM files included in the .gfx file are just binary zeroes in the .zip file. I'm just talking about the GnGeo 0.7 Wiz ROM pack.

I give you an example. Blazing Star has 2 files in the Wiz ROM pack, blazstar.zip and blazstar.gfx.

Here's the file listing of blazstar.zip:

blazstar.png

As you can see, the c1-c8 files have all the same CRC, which makes no sense at all. If you open them up (with a hex editor), you will see nothing else than binary zeroes. The real content of these files is in the blazstar.gfx file. This is the reason, why this game works on the Wiz, but not on the Caanoo. These files have just to be replaced from a working ROM.

This is not enough for encrypted ROMs. Metal Slug 5 is an encrypted example and has also 2 files in the Wiz ROM pack, mslug5.zip and mslug5.gfx.

Here's the file listing of mslug5.zip:

mslug5.png

Again, the c1-c8 files have all the same CRC, which makes again no sense at all. If you open them up (with a hex editor), you will see nothing else than binary zeroes. The real content of these files is again in the mslug5.gfx file. These files cannot be just replaced from other ROMs, they need to be decrypted first with your mentioned WinKawaks procedure.

Hope these examples make it a bit clearer...

PS: I don't know which ROM set you use and which games you already fixed, but this the explanation why the bigger (>64MB) ROMs from the GnGeo 0.7 Wiz ROM pack cannot work on the Caanoo. That was at least my main problem.

I tired that with mslug 5 and it didn't owrk for me. Yours worked?
My link

that also doesn't explain why the games you couldn't get working before didn't work
maybe there's some compatability issues with gngeo?

Metal Slug 5 works for me, here's the content of the working mslug5.zip (compare the CRCs with yours):

mslug5working.png

Regarding Burning Fight and Riding Hero. The just do not work with the current version of GnGeo. The "GAME INFORMATION" part of the game list shows the status for each game, Burning Fight is marked as "NOT WORK". This is why I was curious, how you got it to work. BTW, Metal Slug 5 has a status of "ALMOST WORK", whatever that means.
