So What Do You Expect It To Do?

* 3D drivers might not come in time.

These are still missing? Wow. I didn't realize that.

Wasn't there a video of a PS emulator? Don't tell me that was rendering in software?

Ok, I won't tell you. :p But I'm sure someone else will.

I think so yes, but why is that a problem, just means that when a full H/W rendering is out it'll be even more impressive. now i rest for 10110 hours

What I Expect:

A Linux distribution with a good repository of armel .debs (or other package format) opening up vast expanses of Linux software.
Linux games such as SuperTux, Chromium, bzFlag; apps such as gvim, opera, gimp, pidgin, various media players

Solid betas of emulator ports for:
Sega Genesis
NES
SNES
Gameboy Color

Other stuff I want that may not be ready at launch:

Either a Sega CD emulator or DosBox fast enough to run Megarace
PlayStation emulator
GBA Emulator
Ability to use bluetooth to use wiimote + classic controller, for multiplayer emulators (to be used with video out). I already do this on my Windows machine, haven't tried it on linux yet.
Native running (for open source) or virtualization (for closed source) of other OSs for ARM architecture, such as Google Android (when's that source coming out anyway?) or Symbian or Win CE/Mobile.

I'm buying the pandora for psx4pandora, but I want some other things too.

PSX
Genesis/Mega Drive (CD and 32x if you can)
DOSBox
ScummVM (Gonna play me some Sam and Max :p)
Web Browser
Media Player (MPlayer or VLC)
Text Editor
Super Tux Kart
Neverball
Tux Racer

If I have those, I'll be fine for a while.

What will I do with it?
-Emulation (Mostly nintendo consoles and dos, probably. But also PS1, and all the other good stuff. Just not as much.)
-Media (Music, Movies, Shows and pornogr-... comics)
-surfing (firefox)
-homebrew games (xmoto, abuse, pretty much everything thrown at me I will give a try)
-Calculator (Calculator)
-Programming (Python, java, php, C)
-Wikipedia (Offline copy of it, probably for homework purposes)
-Office tools (text editor tool thing, etc)

What I expect from start:

Basics:

gmenu2x type shell, probably with a terminal built in somewhere. Not a full fledged linux distro yet.
Solid emulators for the classics: snes, nes, mega drive (genesis to the US folk), etc etc (fairly rapidly I imagine people would port over the remaining gp2x emulators)
Hopefully a reasonable psx emu, dosbox and amiga emulation.

I suspect all the above are fairly likely.

Apps:

Basic text editor.
Media player (surely someone has done a mplayer port) possibly with an ugly as sin gui.
Photo viewer.
An mp3, ogg player.
A web browser (even if it is just dillo)
Hopefully an email app.

What I would like to see added shortly after:

Dreams:

A decent ebook reader, how about fbreader?
Imrpoved apps (firefox, decent email client etc)
All the missing emulators.
A specialist kittenwar app.
An excuse generator when I explain to my wife why two hundred odd quid is missing from the bank account.
Ports of classic opensource games.
Homebrew browser like on the Wii

I just hope I get to reporder before the wife finds out I stole her credit card ....

Just don't expect to have all possible things at launch. There are too little developers to push everything in time for launch. Software will come with time.

Some things to consider:
* 3D drivers might not come in time. Same thing for wifi/BT.
* Emus might be a bit unpolished and missing filters, etc. Some emus might be missing completely, but should come and be improved pretty quickly.
* There might be no easy way to run firefox on day one.
* Same goes for other software you expect it to run.
* There might be some random software issues and bugs.

Be aware that this project relies heavily on community and might be missing quality commercial stuff sometimes has. Be sure you understand this before you preorder.
Just tell me you'll have a port of GPFCE and PicoDrive available. Add-ons like graphic filters and a touchscreen menu would be nice, but I'd be perfectly content with a straight port of the GP2X versions for a while.

I'd like to see python and pygame pretty soon after hardware release so I can see what needs to be done to get some games running well (maybe optimizations to existing game code).

I'd also like a media player for music and/or videos.

Web browser.

I would like a web browser and media player. But what is strange is that I don't mind if it comes with nothing at all, at launch. Just an optimized kernel and GUI. I am a patient man. I can just leave it in my dresser drawer and wait for the great aps to build up. I'm more interested about getting the rare hardware this thing is.

For me its great that it have a Gui + browser and maybe media player, thats enough for a launch, and then few weeks latter, some easy emulators like c64, gb and nes. That will be enough for me at begining.

I'm really just looking forward to digging in and checking out anything and everything that's available for download at launch. It's going to be fun to experience the evolution of the device.

Hopefully, i'll be able to do a bit of emulation from day one, at the very least.

What I expect for my purposes is play video, play music, IRC and IMs, oh and also Dosbox but I don't know how stable that will be.

What would make me die and go to heaven is if there's a stable OpenTTD release when I get it. Exult would be gravy, too.

I hope :
Stable Opengl|ES driver :p
Working gdb remote debugger

I won't say nullDC proof-of-concept, since drkIIRaziel said he'd do a port once he got a Pandora, and I don't think he'd get one till at least after the first batch.
I plan to get one from the first batch actually. Imagination technologies have an opengl|ES emulator for pc, so the only thing i need the Pandora for is the dynarec, and if all goes according to the plan most of the middleware (platform independent code) will be ready by the time Pandora will ship so i'l 'just' have to write the compiler backend ;)

Clam emulation.
If you were referring to the way the handheld opens, that was awesome.

For launch day, I want at least...
* PSX with TV-out
...and I'll be a happy camper for the time being. :)

2009, I plan on using it for...
  • PSX, DOSBox, SNES, definitely more.
  • Full Firefox 3 experience.
  • mplayer with all codecs installed.
  • Remote access to my PC, when needed.
  • Pidgin is a must, believe it or not.
  • Office suite, preferably OpenOffice. We'll see how that goes, though, because OpenOffice is a monster of a suite.
I'm sure there'll be more uses, like PIM, that come up down the road, but this is a good list for now.
