wget -O /dev/null <url> isn't bad for measurements. Better than scp anyway, as any SSH operation involves lots of CPU work which may impact measurements, particularly when the link (wi-fi) gets faster.

I just installed Arora on the Pandora.
Pretty nice, fast browser, no rendering errors, no crashes :)

Maybe we should replace Midori with it, at least for first release, as Midori loves to crash (even on my desktop PC...)
Arora is definitely my favorite browser. It has a couple of issues (Occasional crashes, no porn mode, doesn't work right with Facebook, textareas are all slightly off), but it's quite stable, faster than Firefox, and uses Qt.

Edit: Just updated arora-git from yaourt. Somewhere between new Arora and Facebook changing their site for no reason, it does work now.

Hey Ed ,i should really have pointed you to Epiphany web browser if that is possible as i have
found it very much like arora but actuly faster ,more stable and has more features ,i can't
say what it runs like on the Pandora but expect mabe a little slower than arora but a more
full featured nice web browser and very stable, i think its a firefox backend browser ,created
by gnome users.

hope this helps

ps ,it's my fav ubuntu web browser and if i could have it in windows then it would
replace my ie8, chrome and firefox without doubt.

I use Epiphany on my Beagleboard with Angstrom.. have to say it's the best I've used so far.

I use Tear on my N800. Webkit, fast, excellent kinetic scrolling, some bugs and the occasional crash, though.

Tear pretty much never crashes for me. Doesn't do tabs though (does it?) which I would like on Pandora.

The newer version of Epiphany has just changed to a webkit backend IIRC.

I'd definitely go for Epiphany over Midori if I were you ED. I've never been able to use Midori for more than a minute without it crashing out. Shame as it looks like a nice browser :(

I'd prefer a Gecko-based browser.
As we are already suggesting browsers: What about Kazehakase? IIRC it can use both Gecko and WebKit and even supports Firefox plugins.

I wish IE would burn in hell, it's the worst web browser in the world and the security is shocking
for a microsoft product, firefox used to be great but web developments have made browsers even more
usefull these days and i find firefox very bloated ,it needs to be streamlined for all the plugins
it uses ,chrome is a pretty good browser ,infact very nice browser indeed ,i have not gave saffari
a try but i read it's bad ,yes if Epiphany can work on Pandora then i think we have found a great
web browser for the system that everyone will be happy with.

Epiphany-Gecko

Epiphany had the same rendering and crashing issues as Midori for me - I guess the problem is with WebKit, as they both use it.
For the rendering issue, there's a fix, it might also fix the crashing, but it's not yet implemented in our image :)

Ed the first release OS image is looking superb to say the least ,theres a lot of software in there
that i didn't expect to be ported over and ready to use ,but if i may request and you are not busy
can you try getting totem movie player working ,i ask as this player has a plugin for youtube and
radio stations ,mainly the youtube plugin is simple but works very well ,infact it runs youtube
videos great and this was my fix when i wanted youtube on ubuntu as flash on ubuntu was broken
for a time and then the new version of flash became unstable.

I understand this is not the place for requests but if you can get this on the Pandora it will
give you youtube and i think it's a great step forward and good to show off.

the best working totem player with included youtube plugin version was
included with ubuntu image 8.04. with restricted extras included.
cheers

Still youtube for pandora comes a bit later when they have got the DSP working right? I remember reading somewhere that it requires it, but it probably depends on if you play 360p or 1080p videos :p

I vote for Arora.

I think Qt apps in general would be better on a device like Pandora considering Qt is owned by Nokia.

matenrou , i think it should work still without a hardware driver ,i used totum on a dell mini
with no display driver as i was using hardware not really supported in ubuntu at version 8.04
and yes the video plays perfectly including full screen ,i didn't try hd but then again i am
unsure ttoum had an option for hd at that time ,but i am pretty sure if we can get totum working
on the Pandora youtube would work perfectly.I also mentioned ubuntu 8.04 as this image didn't
give me problems with totum but later images had newer versions of totum player that did not
include youtube plugin and even with the option to download the youtube plugin from the totum site
the plugin did not work and there were many issues with the plugin support in general with new versions.

Also can i just say ,Arora crashes when a flash enabled site is used
not all the time but quite a bit ,depends on the site and flash functions
i say do not use Arora ,its a basic browser but mabe too basic and still
has problems.

Due to all my stupidly cryptic passwords I need a solution that'll synchronise my passwords across browser instances. So that leaves me with Firefox or Fennec really.

We've got Totem, but without hardware acceleration it plays YouTube video with about 1 frame each three seconds.
