Gngeo2x 0.6.12

Just like Azure, I can't load anything with new speed-hack version of gneogeo :(. I've tried to wipe out the whole gneogeo and install it again but it didn't work.

I have Mk1 with firmware 2.0.0. Any Ideas?

i tried with unibios.
i've realized that small roms work fine with this beta version while roms bigger that 10megs get back to the menu directly after loading.

For me all the roms I've thrown at the new version have worked. From small 5mb to bigger 60mb roms. The failure has to be something else.

Oh, and can someone give me an advice? I've been searching for a working Metal Slug 3 version now a long time. All the version I've tried ( with renaming, copying between encrypted and non-encrypted versions using the romrc file ) haven't worked now. I've found a torrent that contains a version that should work, but it is around 150mb and it loads with 0.5kb/s. What I'm searching for isn't a link to a rom page, but a detailed description of your mslug3.zip or mslug3n.zip. Like which version, the file sizes, the files themselves etc.

Thanks a lot.

Couple of quick questions, sorry if they have been asked allready.

I am using gngeo2x 0.6.12 with the rage2x 0.8.7 front end, most games seem to work fine, however I now cannot adjust the volume level? it just stays on full volume?

Is there a idiots guide on how to dump roms using dumpgfx

Thanks

Suj

if it needs to be it will do it on the gp2x, that's how I did it

Bleh, the newest version screwed everything up. The newest version wasn't working at all for me, so then I replaced all the files with those from the older version and now that version doesn't work either! So frustrating.

EDIT: I just tried putting Rage2X on but it seems to be a different version from what I was used to. With this new version pressing A takes you to a new menu where you choose 2 different settings. Do you still use START to run games? All the other buttons do nothing and pressing START resets the GP2X. It doesn't even work without Rage2X.

*sigh*

I dont remember if I posted this or not, but Metal Slug 3 runs fine with the old dump, and everything is there, except for a layer of corruption on top of it. Here are some images, the first is autoplay (from sitting at the title screen) and the second is from level 1 actually playing it.

Does anyone know where I can get the older Rage2X (The one before 6/17)? I don't like this latest version since I cannot get it to load roms at all.

I think I found the older Rage2X but I'm still having trouble getting it to work. None of the face buttons work at all when trying to load a game. All I can do is press start or select and move up and down. If I press select, I can use the face buttons just fine there (I just can't use them in the rom select menu).

To load a rom in the new Rage2x press A to select a particular game and then press A on the config file you want to use [i.e. press A x2].

;)

SWEET JESUS! Metal Slug X runs faster now without overclocking (both without sound) than it did when I was clocking it to 266mhz+.

MAGNIFIQUE

To test this gngeo MMU hack i copied the included file over the one that was present in the gngeo 0.6.12 release. I used Metal Slug 2 for testing and started the rom using the Rage2x frontend. I always used 200Mhz for the CPU and tested with 11 and 22 Khz sound. To be able to compare the speed difference between this beta and the 0.6.12 release I enabled the showfps option in Rage2x.
  • Testing Metal Slug 2 at this configuration did not show a speed increase at all! It made it even worse!!! The difference between the best and worst framerate was bigger using this beta version than in the original 0.6.12 and the game run more choppy.
  • As always, using 11 Khz Sound worked better than 22 Khz.
  • There was also a big difference in framerate between watching the demo play that comes after the main menu, when you do nothing, and actually playing the game. Playing was often up to 20fps slower than watching the self playing demo (22Khz -> 28-32fps self playing demo; < 10fps when actually playing myself)!!! Why can this be? Input handling cannot consume this much power can it?
  • Also in this forum it is stated that starting this beta version of gngeo could take some time longer showing a black screen. I did not notice this when running gngeo from Rage2x.
As a last test I tried to run Metal Slug at 200 Mhz 11 Khz sound not from Rage2x but from the default selector which comes with gngeo itself. There I could detect the delay in starting and the game also ran faster!!

Now I am puzzled. Why is there a difference between starting with Rage2x or from the selector? Am I doing something incorrectly?

Do you use a recent version of rage2x? (old one have a bug and sometimes launch gngeo @133Mhz instead of 200).
I'll try to make the same kind of test tonight.

As for the difference between demo and in game fps, It's not only the io handling but all the other things like IA, colision detection etc. can make a difference.
edit: Also, in mslug, I'm not sure that there is music in demo mode, just sound effect.

Yes, I use 0.8.8 which AFAIK is the newest. I just did some more testing and until 5 minutes ago I was unable to reproduce this slow behavior. Just 5 minutes ago after starting the rom directly in the first level the framerate counter dropped to <5 fps and for some time showed even 0 fps. The game ran really choppy but without seeing the counter I would still not ever have guessed that it were less than 3 fps. I don't know how the counter is implemented but it does make really big jumps (even when just staying in the same position all the time). Where can this strange behaviour come from? Maybe Linux does something in the background? But what would that be, to slow the game down this much?

It would be nice to have a feature in gngeo which would allow better and more objective benchmarking like:
  • frames rendered + time elapsed -> would give correct overall average fps after say 30 Minutes af play.
  • min + max + avg fps (overall and within the last 1,2,5 etc minutes)
  • maybe all or a combination of this data together with a timestamp or something that would allow to plot a graph.
Actually, saving the total number of frames rendered every 5 seconds or so would be enough since all the fps data could be derived from this.

There is the --bench option, it run gngeo for 5000 frames, then exit and show the average fps. But I can make it better :)
Did you have something running in the background? telnet or ftp server? samba?

Oh, I see. Have to test this out.

No, I went to gngeo directly after booting.

Something else: Using the default rom selector, after returning from a rom it tells me that the CPU frequency is 166 Mhz even tough I started the rom with 200Mhz. This must be a bug.
The MMU version today crashed 2 times exactly after pushing R + Stick to exit the rom. The 0.6.12 did not ever do this. Maybe these are just random quirks with my GP2x but maybe not.

No this is'nt,

I got the same problem yesterday,
I started to think it was an overclock problem but
after all, it may be a bug.
